Down pipe question, turbo housing install.

Ok so I have an 18 housing coming. Of course it is flange mount on the downpipe. I have the choice of finding an adaptor, the exhaust elbow, or purchasing a 4 inch down pipe that fits up directly. In the future I will be going to a four inch exhaust system, but only the down pipe will be necessary, not the rest of the system.

Any ideas of an inexpensive steel down pipe? I guess then I would use an reducer to the present system for now. Or would I be better off finding an elbow and staying with the current downpipe?

I have some time on this as I have an extra turbo to work with.

'flange mount'? is that 1/2 marmon, full marmon? my b1-2 is 1/2 marmon, so the downpipe has to be 1/2 marmon to use a v-band clamp. pm me if you just need a flared downpipe for full marmon, i have a leftover downpipe stub 4" with the flared end that i'd give away for shipping.

I vote for the elbow. All the 12 valve guys who swapped their HX-35's for something bigger should have an elbow laying around that they would sell cheap. I've seen 'em on Ebay, too. The guy I got my WH1C from parts out CTD's pretty regularly, and he takes everything apart. He sold the elbow seperate from the turbo, I didn't grab it because 1st gens don't use the elbow.

Dave that is where I wanted to go, simple bolt up. But have not been able to find an elbow on ebay or anywhere else. If you hear of one, let me know, elbow and clamp.

The elbows I've seen all bolt onto the turbo housing. I think you will end up making an adaptor of some sort. I guess you could cut the plate off the elbow and weld a flange on it.

Actually there were three or four years where the elbow attached to the turbo like a down pipe and the later model down pipe bolted on. That makes it a bolt up situation. A couple of months ago I bid on one at ebay but have not seen one on there since.

It is probably a good deal because it expands from the three inches at the turbo to the three and a half at the downpipe. And you know me, I wouldn't do anything that the engineers did not plan on

If you're talking about the flange to pipe elbow that goes between the turbo and the downpipe, I have one hanging in the shed from when I put my Jacobs on.

If it is from your '99 it would not be the right one. This one clamps on where the '99 bolts on. If your uses a band clamp to attach to the turbo, pm me and I will purchase it from you. Thanks.

This si the stock one that I removed to install the Jacobs. It has about six or eight bolts that hold it to the back of the turbo and then the down pipe attaches with a band clamp like you're talking about.

the earlier trucks had the bolt on plate and the elbow separate...yours is one piece. Haulin' needs the earlier elbow.

I'd be glad to send you mine Haulin'...I'll be changing turbos soon and won't need it, but can't send it yet.

If I could make my downpipe work, I'd send it tomorrow. Let me do some checking!!
Chris

EDIT: I'll be able to send it out Friday if you need it, I can get a part to make a new downpipe, and have it tomorrow!

Haulin, you need one? I should have the elbow and band clamp to attach to the 12v style backplate on the HX-35.

Fred, thank you so much for replying. I believe that I have one coming. If that does not work out, I will be in contact.

Again, thanks,
Bill
