Truck won't shut off.
91 Dodge CTD
It won't shut off with the key.I tried unplugging two solenoids under the injection pump,no luck.I had to choke the supply line to the pump.
What is the fix?thanks.

Sounds like the tip of the plunger in the shutoff solenoid got ripped off. There's a write-up on how to fix it in the sticky.
Your local VW dealer has the solenoid for about half of what Cummins wants.

I just went through the same thing with my 91 ,turned out to be the shut off solenoid on the pump.I was able to order one through o'reilly auto parts for 75 bucks. That seems to have taken care of it.
what do you mean when you say choke the supply line to the pump? if this isn't what you are talking about, there is a lever on the side of the pump that will cut off the fuel supply. some guys have given up on the solenoid and attached a choke cable to shut it down.
lol.I thought that was a primer lever.I clamped off the rubber supply line.
I just need to get through a few days. This is my work truck and I'm too busy to deal with this right now. That and it's almost 5,so parts houses are closing.

use the lever on the side of the pump to shut it down, and if you have something to rig up, run the line into the cab so you can shut down semi-normal (without popping the hood every time you stop) until you have time to fix it correctly.
ALSO, as long as the solenoid is working and it's just the tip that's busted i believe there is something in the sticky that will show you how to make yours work again... others will correct me if i am wrong.

Primer lever is on the lift pump.
Shut-down lever is on the injector pump.
I don't know what would happen if someone got the two mixed up and tried to shut-down with the primer; but, I can't imagine the experience being good.
FYI,shutting down the primer doesn't seem to hurt anything.DAMHIK
I read the sticky. Can I remove the solenoid and mess with it in my rare spare time or will it spew gas?
Also, which one is the solenoid, the one on the back of the pump with 2 wires or the one on the side with 1 wire?
Thanks guys!!!!
You can take out the plunger and spring, then put the body back on and drive the truck, you just have to use the manual shutoff.
Solenoid is the 2 wire one.
If you go to VW, just tell 'em it's for an '85 Golf diesel.

Sweet. The it's special order from the dealer for $58.Compared to $70 from the diesel shop.I'll get it and then fix the old one and keep it as a spare. In the mean time I'm rollin with speaker wire.
Thanks!!!!
Thanks!!!!
