Trany gurus, damage or bad machining?

Couldnt wait for the FSM to get here and tore down my A518 today. Have no idea as to this things past and everthing seemed in good condition until I saw the rear planetary:

these knicks are above 3 of the 4 smaller gears in the exact same spot, area around the 4th gear is smooth as margarine. Just dont know enough about trans' to guess what its from, whatchya think?

Also, I COULD NOT get the OD section off until I got the front planetary snap ring off and ended up pulling the output shaft out along with the OD section, only to pull the O/P shaft out of the OD section with a tug or 2. So what in Scoobys name did I do wrong?

seen that befor they stake the cross pin that holds the pinon axle in nothing to worry about you want to look for pitting of the gears rocking of the gears & end play of the gears. ken

If you plan to add much power, now is the time to replace that planetary with a steel one.

I put a 5 pinion steel in mine. Mine was cooked and about to let go. And that was with stock power. The previous owned drug a 5th wheel around with it.

The gears look pretty pitted, maybe overheated or dirty fluid.
Must have been getting noisy, mating gears must also be messed up.

The marks could be for identification.

Definetly decided on a new set, and I bought the trans in unknown condition, fluid was black as it could be. had a snapped off cooler line fitting to boot!
