Hey there fellas... Quick question on tire size.
I have a bone stock 92w250 ... 235/85/16 tires

Got an outstanding deal on bfg all-terrains 275/80/16 ... Will they fit ?

 

I'm gonna say yes they will not because I have a W but because 285/75r16 fit on my D and the sizes are within 1.3% of each other. You have got to have more front wheel clearance than a 2wd truck.

 

My leaf springs are flat and the stock tires have tons of room ... Just how much bigger are the 275/70/16 than the stockers?

 

275/80 will be 1.59" larger in diameter, 1.57" Wider and 0.8" taller in sidewall than 235/85.

So looks like just about 3/4 of a inch in height between the rim and fender will be lost and you'll lose 3/4 of a inch between sidewall and steering linkages or leaf springs.

 

I've found that the narrower the rim, such as our stock steelies, causes the tire to buldge in the center, as the surface of the tread pyramids upwards when filled to pressure. When a wider rim is used, the sidewalls move outwards, allowing the tread to lie flat. The sidewalls are "pinched inwards" giving it this effect, no longer being perpendicular to the rim.

Premature center treadwear can be a problem if tire pressure isn't lowered accordingly, and sometimes you get funny handling characteristics for the same reasons.

 

They will fit. 285/75r16 can be run on a stock wheel with no problems and that's wider than the tire you mention. Run them, enjoy them, and post pictures of them!

Don't listen to some mumbo jumbo about tire bulging and wearing prematurely blah blah blah.

I figured they would just wasn't sure about rubbing... Do not want to start trimming fender well right now (I've got enough long over do bodywork as it is)

I drive about 50miles a week (hard road and gravel road ) ... So I don't think premature wear will be a big issue. I don't tow or haul heavy so I don't think lower air pressure will cause issues either ...

Should have them on my old rust and rattle by Friday... I'll post s couple pics if I can figure out how!

My D205 has had 235/85/16s since I bought it in 1996 they do ware very slightly more in the center. probably less air pressure would alleviate that though.

C range 265-75 16 on a stock oem steelie will run fine- pliable sidewalls help.
E range 265 75-16 tires like BFG all terrain with the stiff sidewall will wear the middle off and be dangerous in a panic stop- I had to switch to Ford 16x7s to get my BFGs to finally ride flat

Tire manufacturers state minimum rim width is 7 in for most 265 75 16.

Can't imagine running 285s on a stock 16x6 rim. Its dangerous without a 1500 lb ballast in the bed

 

I should say my truck has 16x8 rims.

 

Well fellows long story short ... the deal fell through with the BFG's (his new tires on back order for 3-4weeks) ... anyway tires on sale at Canadian Tire (buy 3 get the 4th free) mount balanced, road hazard warranty, etc...

So I settled on 235/85/16 Cooper Discovery
AT/W's ... first time to buy Cooper's so we will see

 

I've never run the AT/W's, but I will only use the Discoverer S/T's now, great tire.............

I don't think you will regret it.
