swap question auto to manual, with a twist

hey, so i can get my hands on a spicer 5 speed transmission, model # is Cm 5252-A i know they get them in the freightliners like the fl70's whitch have our 5.9 engines. so my question is can or has anyone swapped a spicer 5 speed into our trucks? with the divorced transfercase? and i can get all the bellhousing and everything, just need the adpater, it's hydraulic push type lever on the bellhousing.

Why do you want that heavy balky thing? It does not even have overdrive.

They shift like crap also, a fuller trans is even worse. It will give you that big rig feel but with those long throws idk if you'd have enough room in our cabs. My knuckles it the dash when i go into first.

i dont know i have blown up 2 autos in the last year, and this transmission came up and i figure dit would be a neat swap, not really any purpose for it, just something different, but i did not realize it was that bad of a transmission, i think ill end up with gettin another transmission like ATS or something like that

It's not that they're bad transmissions, in fact they'll probably last way longer than any stock transmission from a Dodge, but I wouldn't use one unless you want it for heavy duty kind of work. I'm still collecting parts for a swap on my truck, but I'm building it for lots of long-distance heavy towing.

The first time I drove one I couldn't figure out why I kept grinding the gears so much, and it turns out that the synchros aren't really the same as the ones on passenger vehicles... you have to hold the shifter lightly against the gear for half a second or so before it'll go. So if you're racing it or something you definitely don't want to go that route.

I can't imagine putting a 13/18 speed in one, those things weigh close to half a ton!

:-D i agree with machinos, he explained it better than i could. They the laid back, easy going, but will tow a house kind of transmissions.

As for the bigger transmissions i wouldn't put anything but an Eaton fuller 6 because the the gears are spaced out and would be better for our small trucks. The tight gear ratios of other would suck, or you might not have a good gear in the rear to jump a gear or two.

i am gathering parts to put a fuller 6 speed in my crew cab i have read that the sae 2 bellhousing that med duty truck transmissions use will not fit under a stock 1st gen firewall so i made a adaptor to use a getrag bell and am yet to figure out if its going to use the fullers 1 3/4" input or get turned down to a 1 1/4

You should be able to get a different clutch to match, right?

Use the one for that particular trans....right? Then get a custom fork made, how ever you decide how to actuate it. I have a circle track and 4wheel parts book they have all sorts of hydraulic slave cylinders, i'll see if anything looks like it will work. Can you get pictures of all this? maybe even a measurement of the distance between where the clutch will sit and the rear of the housing.
