steering shaft questions

has anyone here replaced their worn out steering shaft with a factory dodge item, instead of the borgeson?

what are the benefits of the borgeson shaft set up? My factory unit went over 200k miles before getting loose.

I am not out in the bush with this truck, crawling over stumps and rocks or anything like that...

Just thinking of saving a few bucks, and it looks like if it is just the coupler and associated soft parts, then it will be much cheaper to repair the OEM set up. Mine isn't so far gone that I think the shaft itself is damaged.

any ideas on this?

The coupler set from Dodge is cheap, but it will not hold up long on a 4X4 because of the angle it has to operate at. Unless you are planning to sell the truck soon, you will be rebuilding it again.

Is the replacement part less durable than the original? Does the cab on the 4x4 sit higher on the frame?

I went ahead and bought the "soft parts" kit from dodge, that includes the spring, seal, roll pin and "shoes" that fit inside the coupler. That was $14.49. I don't know yet if the coupler part itself is beat too, but if it is, I found that online for under $50. The shaft is $130 online or $175 from dodge, so if i need that too, then the borgeson is a better deal.

I need to fix this sloppy steering ASAP so I can put new tires on without wrecking them and i just can't spend that $220 on the borgeson right now. And sometime back it seemed like there was a thread about the borgeson shaft falling apart in normal service and almost leaving someone with no connection to their steering box at all. Did borgeson fix that problem, whatever it was (can't remember the details...) ?

thx!

There is nothing unsafe about the Borgeson and it is in all ways better than O.E.M.

The problems were caused by worn-out steering columns allowing the Borgeson to telescope when it wasn't supposed to, easily remedied by proper use of the set-screws that limit telescoping.

The factory shaft has no provision for telescoping, so the worn out columns do not make themselves evident in quite such a dramatic fashion.

If I were taking the time/trouble to remove the factory shaft, I would not feel right in not replacing it with either a Borgeson or Flaming River unit.

No, they just don't seem to last very long on 4X4's. The steering box is mounted at a different angle than a 2wd truck. On the 2wd's the steering shaft comes straight in and the factory coupler will last 10 years. The 4X4's bring it in at about a 20 degree angle and the coupler wears out pretty fast.

Just go all out and put the Flaming River on it. It works as smooth as glass and looks sweet at the same time!!!

All that shiny stainless steel would probably make the rest of the truck feel bad...
