speedometer died
speedometer died
I am on the road right now but have to fix this problem when I get bac k this weekend. I am hopeing you guy's might have some ideas.
While on the road the speedometer started to bounce maybe 10 mph or so. It slowly but shurely indicated slower and slower speeds while bouncing about 10 mph from the speed I was going. When it got to 0 it bounced a couple of times and went dead. It has done this before but always came back in a few minutes and was fine. I took the connection to the speedometer off at the trans and put it back on thinking it may have come loose but that isn't it. Any ideas???
Thanks for the help

Hi Dave
How's it goin? Long time no hear.
Yeah it's funny. I was crusin along at about 65 when it started to jump. It finally went to o. Every once in a while it will flip a bit but not much.
Do you know where the sensor is located? Is it on the trans where the connection is? There is what looks like a gear housing that the connector comes off of at the tail of the trans.
Hey what kinda boost did you say you were getting? I have the pump about right now for pullin the fifth but I need more boost.

Yeah, the connector plugs right into the sensor, that's all there is to it.
Still running gaugeless, but the manifold's tapped for a pyro. If I could stay out of gun stores I'd have gauges and injectors by now.

I heard that about the gun stores. Have a touch of that illness myself. Always playin with different loads and tryin to find ways to improve stuff.
I can't figure if its the sensor or maybe a bad connection at the speedometer. I think I will put a resistance test on the connector and see if there is continuity. If not I guess it's the sensor. Nothing works, the odometer isn't working either. If it were just the speedometer not workin and the odometer was I would figure maybe the gauge itself. It's probably either the sensor or a bad connection at the speedo. I wonder what the sensor goes for????

The keyway on the L-shaped housing was broken on mine... I've checked & replaced nearly everything else. I rebuilt the houseing today with a new shaft pressed into the gear, and a new keyway, but now all the speedo does is bounce around, instead of sitting at 0mph like it did before. The next thing I'm going to do is try another gear housing, in hopes that will work.

Try the other options first, they are cheaper. But the housing's run around $80 from the dealer (thats what they told me yesterday)
Try replacing the VSS, Tightening the Yoke Nut, Checking the nylon worm gear inside, speedo connections, wiring to VSS, etc. There are MANY threads on this forum about similar problems...we're almost all plagued by it. I'm going to scout the junkyards next week for one, if I can't find one, I guess the dealer is the last option.

I took the sensor out this afternoon. It gets contenuity at the two pins. It is turning through the unit but I can't get a voltage reading on the pins when I put a drill on the gear end and spun the sensor. I can't tell for sure but is it possible that the gear in the transfer case is spinning free? I think I can move it when I put my finger in there and tried to move it. Does that gear come loose? I didn't put a resistance check on the wire to the speedometer yet maybe in the morning.
