rebuilding turbo

I bought the 60mm whel upgrade, and I figure with 400+k I should replace the berings as well. Before I take everything apart, that little nut, on the wheel, they tell me is tourqed at 125 lbs, since I can spin it with my finger, whats on the other end ? How you you hold it still to get that nut loose, and then back on?

Look on the other side of the shaft, you can hold it there.
THE TORQ IS IN INCH POUNDS NOT FOOT POUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And it's left handed threads if I remember right? But I'm an old man, good luck.

I wouldn't rebuild it unless it needs it. If the shaft of the turbo feels real sloppy or loose then it may be worth rebuilding, but if its just barely loose and isn't rubbing on housing and no in and out play then I say just run it. Weirdest thing is my stock h1c felt the tightest turbo I ever had out of all the ones I've had and it had the most miles on it.

The nut on the wheel is reversed thread so lefty is tighty and loosey is righty. On the exhaust side you can get a wrench or socket on the turbine wheel and hold it to get the nut off the compressor side. You'll see what I mean.

19mm 12 pt. socket fits the turbine end of the shaft.

I dont know what real loose is but it seems to have a little side play, have not checked for in and out.
Gillett diesle seemed to think it was a good idea considering it has 418,000 miles on it. Made sence to me, I have not ordered the bearing yet

They can have a little play side to side, but if they have any in and out play or if the compressor wheel is rubbing or hittting the housing from side to side play then it needs rebuilt. But its your choice. I guess if you are gonna take the turbo off and do all that then might as well rebuild it and know that you have a new turbo.

I checked my tubo for play yesterday as i was putting a new KF filter on. Its pretty tight side ways, I knew that but I can pull it out just a little. I did not measure it yet, but how much play is ok ? I will measure it with a dial indicator on a magnetic base, I cant think of any other way.

The specs are 0.012-0.018" side to side and 0.001-0.005" in and out. If it is out of spec I would order a new thrust collar along with the rebuild kit. I am not sure what they cost, but I have found that they wear a little.
