Rear Gears

Should they look like this? I haven't received my new Spider Set yet so not really sure? Is this why it clunked in the rear end?

I do not tow or pull anything. I bought the truck with 88,000 miles on it (5 years ago) and previous owner did pull a 5th wheeler. It now has 225,000 miles on it and mostly Burnouts, Racing, Brake Locks burnouts, Nascar Mark's old motor. I just think with the power (308 rwhp) and my driving finally took its toll. They have been making some noise for a couple of years. I think between snow plowing last year (1st time) and my driving it finally needed a rest.

I just can't wait for the new ones to be in. They should leave a nice patch down the road....

I am amazed the truck even still drove. It clunked REALLY bad so I stopped driving it, but still amazed at what these Dodge Trucks can do.

They will be joining my Garage Wall along with my 2 Flex Plates. One is in 2 pieces while the other (latest one) is in 3 pieces just ripped apart. I still feel though that I am getting my monies worth compared to the amount of time and $$ placed into the Truck. Still beats a monthly payment (new truck) and it is just a blast to drive.

Yikes! I hope mine don't look that bad. I've got slack in the driveline, all U-joints are good, axle is quiet, so I'm sure that's my problem too. I'm going to pull an axle and count splines one of these weekends. Nuttymopar, did you have to pull the carrier out of the housing or were you able to do it in the housing?

I have an auto and it had the 32 spline. I did pull the carrier out because it took some good banging with a hammer to get the shaft out. It was pretty goofed up in there and I am lucky that the shaft even came out of the carrier which is machined to the exact size of the shaft. But with the shavings and crap on there, it was a little bigger. Roll Pin wouldn't even come out, but found out that the shaft could turn so roll pin wasn't doing it's job. So just started banging and it came out after awhile. Cleaned everything up pretty good and went together in minutes. I had NO shims on the carrier bolts? So it was easy to get back together. All together, maybe 45 minutes to get carriet out, put new parts in, bolt back together and be driving if I didn't need to bang it out so bad. I did not need to take my Ring Gear off so no need to adjustments when it went back in.

You got lucky, the way your roll pin failed. My spider gears hardly look worn as far as I can see. My roll pin came out, and the shaft slid out and caught the pinion gear. also chipped the ring gear. When the shaft hit the pinion, it bent so it can't be removed. ALso made the holes in the carrier it rides in, egg shaped. The replacement is getting closer though, I think.

I agree, that would've been a pain for me. I was neverous that the shaft wasn't going to come out because it had a bunch of metal ground into the side. But by getting a bigger hammer, it did come out. Cleaned up the casing with some heavy sandpaper and it cleaned up rather well. Have over 300 miles on the new one within a couple of days so all is well. I forgot what it was like to put it in gear and not hear.... CLUNK.
