The red stuff is what Mopar used to use. The ultra grey works great now. I have never, ever waited to let the sealer cure. Just make sure both surfaces are clean and dry before slapping the cover on. You don't need a lot of sealer either, makes the job harder the next time. I just apply an 1/8" bead around the cover, going on the inboard of the bolt holes. Tighten it down and fill it with fluid. The key is clean and dry with no oil film. I use brake cleaner and a clean rag.

I use brake clean on a rag as a final cleaning step too.

Working in a professional shop, I am sure you don't have the time to fill the fluid up the next day.

When I am working on my trucks, if I deem taking my time as even maybe giving me a better result, I do it.

I understand that. Yeah, waiting to fill it with fluid isn't going to cut it. That leaves my lift dead and I'm not making any money. Besides telling a customer he can't have his truck back because we can't fill it with fluid isn't going to go over well.

I've never had a problem doing it though. Doesn't matter if it's engine oil, trans fluid, coolant or gear lube.

Lucas oil additive

Has anyone just put Lucas oil additive as the rear diff oil. I am using it now and my temps are staying between 110 to 230 depending on outside temps and the weight of my horse trailer.

I use amzoil lube in mine, and I still have to use 1 or 2 tubes of friction modifier. Just put lube in. If it chatters and chirps going around a corner, add some friction modifier. Repeat till it settles down.

Not sure if I would use the straight lucas oil additive....might keep the temps lower but does it have the high pressure additives in the oil that is need to cushion and protect the gears as they mesh between the pinion and ring gears?

I just use 75-140 mobil 1. Btw, if you mark the top of your tire and a spot on the drive shaft and spin the tire 1 rotation and count the driveshaft rovolutions, its gives you your gear ratio too.

I used it in my open diff of my fuso for about a day, and dumped it all out. The diff got so hot, it scalded my hand when I placed it on there by accident, after a half hour drive.

Switched to amsoil severe gear and it has been fine since
