quick RAD question
quick RAD question
It's raining here and im lazy. im going to flush my RAD here soon before the warm months and towing season and i wanted to know if there is a petcock valve to drain it or do you simply have to remove the lower hose and make a mess? thanks! jiMMy
It's fixing to rain here also. I think it has one but I can't remember for sure. I changed my thermostat last year and I don't remember it NOT having one. I have the old style topdown radiator. If you have a crossflow it might be different.
Dang! You got me to wonderin so I went out and looked. Yes. Mine has a petcock. It's on the back bottom drivers side corner of the radiator.

Radiator drain is on the bottom drivers side. Easy to get to, but splashes quite a bit. With a big drain pain, you can do it without spilling.
Cummins specifies a LOW SILICATE coolant formula. This is more important than brand. Don't buy anything that doesn't say LOW SILICATE on the label. Texaco makes a LS "for heavy duty diesel engines" that is available at most parts stores.

Just FYI, I just flushed mine and it took about 7 cycles to get the stuff to run clear. I would just fill it with water, drive it long enough to get up to temp so the thermostat opens, with the heat on, so everything mixes. Then drain it and do it again. It took at least 7 times before I would put the coolant in. It was tedious, but Im **** about stuff like that and wanted a clean starting point.
