Quick question need help quick

This is a stupid question, but i need to know if the cat on the 04.5 + engines is actually a catalytic converter or just a resonator. I need to know this for the ignorant "performance" shop im having install my muffler. He's saying there is no catalytic converter on the 05 cummins, in fact he says there is no catalytic converter on diesel period!

Thanks for the help people.

It is a cat. ALL 600 and 610 motors have them.

I should of said they came from the factory with a cat. Many are cat-less now.

Thanks for the help guys. Another question:

Just how hard is it to take the factory muffler off and salvage it enough to be able to possibly put it back on in the future??? these guys at the shop think thats somehow pretty hard to do?? Im thinking Meinekee or another muffler shop will be better than these jokes!

(i guess this question would probably fall under performance and accessories)

Unless the truck is rather new and not many miles on it, the muffler will be pretty well stuck/rusted to the exhaust pipes, and nothing less than a sawz-all will remove it.

My truck had 22k on it (and a little over a year old) when I did the exhaust, and there was no way I could have loosened it up enough and slide it off. The saw worked great. Everything I removed ended up in the dumpster.

I don't mind cutting it off with a sawz-all, torch, whatever it is one bit, just as long in case i need to re-install it, it can be fabbed up by a muffler shop pretty easy. I know a few here have removed there stock exhaust and re-installed it after not liking the noise level. So as long as it can be repaired and re-fabbed in a way to be re-installed i'll be happier than rossie o'donnel in a buffet full of ho-hos

Thanks all
Eric

Yea as long as you don't butcher it up you should be able to have a muffler shop weld it back on, I saved mine just in case I ever have the need to put it on again for whatever reason.

My cat has it's claws out....is scratching and clinging onto the pipes under my truck....fighting like a devil to stay on there.....I have it by the tail....yanking....pulling....trying to get it out from under my truck.

Why are all these cats under these trucks anyway?? That's no place for a cat!!

It is supposed to be a cat but, when I hook my obdII scanner mine has an option where it will go through and check everything, when it gets to oxyg sensor it says N/A, when it gets to cat N/A so go figure. Even on my last insp they had checked N/A on the sheet where it says cat.

The best thing you can do is move away from the clamps on the muffler about 5 or 6 inches and make a clean cut. Then if you need to you can buy double bell ended peices from JC witney or other autostores that are 12 inches long to put it back in place.Sometime that noise is just to much for the wife.Mine threatened never to ride in my truck again. So I had to put the Banks exhaust system on mine to quiet it down.I still get the same flow just not as much noise.
