Power Steering Rebuild?

My power steering pump leaks a little bit... Nothing too bad, but I'm sick of stains on the concrete and having to throw a newspaper down under my truck whenever I park...

(It's also annoying to have to top it off every few gas changes... Especially when I accidently put too much in and get to try to syphon some out with a Slurpee straw in front of 7-11...)

So I think that I have to break down and install new seals or whatnot. I have no idea how to do this, other than getting fleeced by somebody. Actually, I don't even know where to take it to get fleeced.

Has anybody ever installed new seals in a pump? Is it a process that a mechanical newbie with decent tools can accomplishment?

I've tried the power-steering-leak-stop stuff and that just slowed the leaks down.

Thanks for any help...

I found a deal for you. Me too, cause mine leaks like a sieve and howels when cold. Gotta guy that will sell a rebuilt cheap, or send you a kit to do your own. Even includes a video to go by. Cept you're gonna have to wait until I get back to Indiana. I had my computer DOC go through my system to see why it was so slow. . .he's and axe man so to speak, totally wiped everything out and reloaded. My "ball of string from Stratton" is no more. I never delete anything. . .I feel naked.

Cheers,
Steve J

So I would assume that, if the process takes a video for proper explanation, that it is rather complex?

Truthfully. . .I don't know. Have talked with several wrenches and one pump builder, I'm told it's more difficult to get the thing out than it is to rebuild it. However, I received video tapes when I purchased: Garmin StreetPilot III GPS, my video tape player/recorder machine, and the wife's new front loading clothes washer. None of which I found particularly difficult to operate. The deciding factor if I do it myself or buy one he's done will be: if I have the time, and if I have the tools. I've requested if he'll rebuild Dodge seat adjuster motors. Lots of haulers I've come across have had the rear raiser fail. He sort of ignored that request. . .so I'ma still sittin ina hole. DC wants $500+ for that puppy. Read on the boards a guy took his apart and found the only problem was the lubricant had flowed over the brushes.

Cheers,
Steve J

Begle 1 - Have you tried a stop-leak product yet? If the leak is not too bad that will often cure it.

BTW, don't worry too much about overfilling the PS reservoir. It'll just puke the extra out.

I've tried the leak-stop stuff... Worked great! Unfortunately, I still leak (albeit alot less)...

And where will it puke the rest out off??? I kind of felt stupid sucking PS fluid out of the pump wih a straw...

EDIT: JESUS SNOT! A "seal kit" from mydodgeparts.com costs $345.00!?! What are these things made of??? That's turbocharger money...

EDIT EDIT: Wait a second, the entire pump only costs $252.00... Stupid website...

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Good. A "seal repair kit" from Kragen only costs $16.00... I can clean my pants know...

I take it that THIS would stop the leaks?

It oughta - unless the shaft has a groove worn in it.
