Newbie with exhaust housing question

Hello all, I did a search, but didn't find a clear answer.

I have a guy that is going to sell me the turbo, and ex housing from a 12 valve 98 model. It is supposed to be the one that came on the truck stock. He said if memory is right it is an 18 cm. My question is, will this ex housing work on my stock turbo? Or do I want to pass on this deal?

He wants $150.00 for the whole thing. Thanks, Tony

It should have a 12cm wategated exhaust housing on it if it is a stock 98 12V turbo. If it does, it is a good deal.

If you realy ment a 89 then it is probably a 18 cm ex housing and will be h1c turbo....derect bolt on but wouldn't be any better the the stock one you have,
thay are both the same!

If it is 98 then it is a 12 cm housing HX/35?.......IT'S A 35 Any ways not shore on the letters!

Now here is the probem, if it is 98 turbo. it will bolt right up to the ex manifold but if your truck is non intercooled the compressor side will need to be modifide to fit.......several guys have dun it just fine!

The real probem is the ex. side of the 35 turbo,if you dont have the v clamp end to bolt on to that turbo, the as cast elbo(35turbo) will interfear with the fire wall make it not usable.
on the back side of the ex turbine is several bolt that remove the elbo and alow you to put the first gen v band plate on. the H1c don't have these bolts and is not a waste gate housing!
there are some out there but i don't thing you can buy them new so i would keep and i out for one of these v clamp ends before you bought 35 . and when you do it will probably be atached to a eary 35 or wh1c and will be just as easy to bolt the hole turbo in instead!

did that make sence or did i just confuss you?!

HMmmm re reading your post,........Make shore that the housing is a waste gated housing! you said that he had a turbo off of a 98 and had 18cm housing for it! that wouldn't be a stock turbo and a vary bad combe to boot!!!!!!

YOU could bolt up a 18 cm housing onto a 35 turbo but would make for a vary vary laggy turbo....wouldn't be worth puting on.!!!!

Dus any one now when thay went to the elbo end, on the turbo!!!!

Was the flanged end still on the 98?

Thanks for the replys:

It is a 98, 12 valve model, but he doesn't know for sure what CM the ex housing is, he can't remember. It is supposed to be a stock turbo, and housing. If I remember it is a wastegate.

My truck is intercooled, so does this mean it will be bolt on project? Thanks, Tony

if it is waste gated the it has to be a 12cm housing

If,... 98 still has our v clamp style then YES......if there is a neck or elbo that is part of the ex side of the turbo then it will not fit with out the swap, the i mention above.

Have him look inside where the housing bolts to the turbo, the size will be cast on the side of the port.

If it is the stock turbo off a '98 it will bolt on like it grew there. The only thing you will have to do is shove the exhaust back about an inch and a half.

Just an update. The deal did not come through, as he had some things stolen. Anyways, I found a new 12 cm wastgated ex housing. Is this the size housing most of you all would recomend putting on this 91.5 truck? Thanks again, Tony

Depends on what your intentions are.

If you want 400hp and plan to tow 20K+ GCVW, then no, it wont be a good combo- too much restriction at high load/RPM.

But, if you want a good daily driver, with say 200-275hp, and only tow light loads occasionally, and want good off-the-line spool, then yes, it would be a great add-on.

FWIW, I had a PDR HX35 on a nonIC 91, with a ported 18cm housing, that spooled nicely with little smoke unless I floored it at 1300rpm in 4th.

I appreciate the response.
What I'm needing is, 1. a daily driver 2. I have a fifth wheel that fully loaded weighs 8250 lbs 3. I sometimes haul round bales of hay for my friends. This would be all that I would use the truck for. I'm open to suggestions, as it needs more than the 21 cm ex housing it now has on it. Thanks, Tony
