lift pump vs water seperator question

Hey, i'm going to get a fuel sump from xdp or from adp and i'm wondering if the lift pump will be able to pull fuel through a water seperator and still be reliable, i'm going to a piston lift pump also at some point i've got the pump just need everthing else. I'm going to plump in a water seperator close to the tank on the frame rail and then the actual fuel filter i'm going to plumb in after the pump and by pass the stock. thanks.

As long as the water separator you use is rated for the amount of HP you want to make. Don't use one designed for a small tractor, you need one for a truck. I'm partial to the Davco units if you don't have one picked out already.

The lift pump will be able to pull the fuel through it, but can restrict the flow. My 92 had a pre-pump filter and it had a noticeable effect with the stock diaphragm pump. Also, doesn't mater weather you have a mechanical or electric pump with a filter/separator on the suction side, a bubble will develop in the top of the filter. Some times they stay put, some times they break loose and travel down stream.

It's a good idea to have the f/w sep pre-pump as they are more effective.

I was going to use a fleetgaurd water separator of some sort and same for fuel filter. I've looked into a davco but are a little to spendy for me. I'm not to worried about the little air pocket because once it leaves there won't be one till I change it or run it dry. I just wanted to make sure the pump would be okay pulling through one usually they do a better job of pushing than pulling but with the dump I was going to loose my screen.

Consider putting a valve on both sides of your new filter, that way you won't have dribbling fuel when you change the fuel filter. Just my two so, Mike.

FS1000, or FS1003 if you dont have the vertical room, is what I would run. It also has standpipe to help with the air bubble on the suction side.

Why is that? (Just curious).

FWIW, the stock/OEM 1st gen set-up has the F/W separator after the lift-pump.

sounds good thanks for the numbers i hadn't gotten that far with it, I'll check into it. I should have plenty of vertical room as i can plumb it where ever i need it.

also is anyone running the Hellman or XDP fuel sump? my biggest worry is knocking it off with log or something.

All OEM setup's in the Dodge have the filter post pump.

Fuel pumps emulsify the water, which makes it harder to separate. So if you pull thru a f/w sep then you will have better separation. Most f/w seps are designed for the vacuum side.

not only that but i think its better to have prefiltering of the fuel before the fuel pump for longivity. Theres probably a reason dodge done that....the water in fuel light won't come on as much keeps the customer happy lol
