Unhappy how much turbo play is to much

I think I'm going to need a turbo.
I have some side to side play and a little front to back, the blades DO NOT make contact with the housing.

I'm just getting ready for the inevitable(sp) before my turbo explodes and takes something else with it.

If any of you guys know how much is to much please let me know, and also what you would recomend to replace it with (keep in mind I'm broke with a baby on the way)

Thanks,
Michael

I have heard that if you can make the wheel touch the housing by hand, engine not running, then it needs rebuilt. But if you can't make the blades touch than it is ok. That is for the side play, I believe if you have longitudinal play, front to back, then you should probably look at new bearings.

My dad had his gone through when the blades were just starting to touch and it was $400. If I had known that before hand I would have just told him to get a piers hybrid, $200 more and so much better!

If you can find a good hx35 on ebay you could go that route, I wouldn't pay more than 250 though, I've been watching and some of them have been going for upwards of 350, too expensive for a ebay turbo though.

I would keep a close eye on it, and see if it gets worse. If it stays the same, no worries. The bearings are all "bush" bearings, so they need play to get the oil in between the surfaces. It is true, however, that there really shouldn't be any discernible end play.

If I remember correctly, the bearings are free floating and for the HX35 there should be from .013 to .020 of side-side play. For the WH1C-H1C it should be .012 to .018. Axial (end to end) should be .001 to .005 for the WH1C-H1C The manual is available on the Holset site as a free .pdf download and there is a supplemental page which gives all the specs.

I'm sorry to hear about this. Like Alec said, keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse. I guess at this point the turbo doesn't owe you anything with nearly 1/4 million on the clock.

If the blades aren't yet hitting the housing, you may be able to get a rebuild kit and put it back into almost new shape. You'll need to DL the manual from Holset and mic the shaft to make sure it's not undersize. If it's OK then you can replace the bearings etc... and be back on the road. The rebuild kit includes everything you'll need and goes for about $80.

Best bet for a budget turbo would be a junkyard 12V (94+) with the HX35...usually can score a good used turbo for under $100.

Down the road, rebuild your H1C and keep it as a spare...

You don't want any front to back play...if you have some, it's gonna go out on you with unpleasant results and usually at the worst possible moment.
