PDR HX 40 How Much end Play is to much?

Had my scotty 2 off the other day and was lookign at my 40. Noticed the nice white balancing material on the blade was almost all done that was sort of a shocker won't it run out of balance? Anyways was checking it out and found a bit of oil in the outer ring so I was cleaning it and noticed when I touched the bolt for the compressor wheel if I applied slight pressure I could move it about 1/16" to 1/8" is that normal for my turbo?

Some movement is ok. Make sure the compressor wheel will not rub the housing itself. You should be fine.

The white paint is a marker for the balancer. Nothing more.

The white paint is probably over spray from the air brushing on your truck.

Jamie:

Odd coincidence. I checked my turbo the other day and found the same question. Recently there was a link to the Holset home page. It's a great site. Good history and downloadable service manuals and service data on all turbos. Try this link to get to the home page. http://www.holset.co.uk/flash/index.html From there work through "Parts & Service", then "Service Literature", then "reference sheets" then download HX & HY service data (10 pages). Page 5 has the radial and axial freeplay tolerences. Sorry for the long explanation, I couldn't get the end page to link up.

Thank you very much bubba! Great info. Looks like between 1/64" and 1/32" is where it should be after checking it today with a dial gauge its about .508 which is on spec.

The play in our turbos is taken up by oil pressure. The best way to check it is after it is hot and to check it right after shut down, so that there is still oil in the bearing.
