grease/oil on rear wheel

I am in the process of repainting my wheels, on the last one (left rear) I have noticed lubricant on the inner wheel (dually). I have pulled the axle,& drained diff. however, the brake drum (rotates freely) will not pull off, what am I not doing? Also, I have a manual (93, truck is 92) do i have the dana 70 or 80 diff.? what is the capacity? oil type? diff. gasket or sealant? Any other advice while Im here on this subject!

thanky

The grease is probably a seal leaking. I just had one replaced on mine. You should be able to tell by the smell if it oil or brake fluid.
Mine is a dana 80 (2nd gen) and hold about 5 qts when empty. If it's limited slip, I would use the additive from DC. Mine has no gasket.
While you have the axle out, check the bearings, especially to outer. Mine was starting to get gaulded and had fine metal flakes in the oil. The bearing and race were replaced.
I don't remember the details, but there is info somewhere that tells you how to get the drums off. I think you have to jack up the back and hit the brakes while the rear wheels are rotating. Do a search and you will find it.

I hope this helps get you going in the right direction.

This is a common problem with the first gens. The area that the seal rides on will develope grooves and a new seal will often leak. You need to check for these grooves and if there are any, install a "speedy sleeve" to fix it. these are thin sleeves that are placed on the axle to provide a smooth surface for the seal to ride on.

You gotta pull the big nut (2 9/16", rounded hex) in the middle. Make sure you pull out the little sheetmetal key first or you'll screw up the nylon insert in the nut as well as the key. Then the whole hub and drum assembly comes off as a unit.

You have the D70.

3.5 qt. "Full" is 1/2" - 3/8" below the fill hole. Extra usually ends up in the brake drums.

I use blue goo (RTV silicone) on the cover and axles, no leaks yet.

grease on rear wheel

thanky, i didnt find or see a key or nylon ring, now, i honestly believe this was a previous problem that had been fixed & not cleaned there was no grease inside the brake drum or on the shoes.(just on inner rim)..anyway, i hope i havent frustated the (new) seal to where it begins to leak, i had to remove it & re-install once. My manual (1993) says my diff. holds 76oz...is this ring & key pertetant to safety?

The nut you pulled off should have been a Ny-loc style lock nut with a nylon insert. There should be a sheet metal key that fits in the keyway of the axle and bites into the nylon insert in the lock nut. Not having the key is a safety issue, the nut could back off and cause you to lose the wheel. Dodge wants way too much for the keys, try these guys. http://www.quad4x4.com/Dodge%20Rear%...t_Upgrade_Kits

ok, the nut may have been a nyloc style, but i never noticed a key way & the manual doesnt mention one, is there a diff. in 92 (truck) & 93 (manual)? i torque the nut to 140 ft lbs then back off 1/3 turn, i will get one before i drive it, i havent put the fluid in it yet so it shouldnt be to messy.
thanx

My '93 FSM talks about the sheet metal key, they call it a nut lock. They did go to a different setup on the '94's, but all the 1st gens are set up as I've described. Are you looking at the wheel bearing service instructions for a Dana 70?

thanx, no, im looking in the rear suspension & axle section 3-30 (dana 60 & 70) for 93 Dodge trucks...i will call dodge & get a part number for this "lock ring/washer" & see if i can cross ref. thur NAPA or elsewhere. I believe the seal had been previously replaced. the one i took out was made in Mexico and there was no oil inside the wheel drum , just on the outside & innner rim, anyway, that said, i need to get the proper lock ring to accommodate the nyloc adjusting nut. i suppose i can pull the axle, remove the nut, or does the "lock" go on the outside of the adjusting nut & bend tabs over nut?...

Its a little pice of sheetmetal bend in a U shape and is tapered to a point (goes to inside) This fits in the keyway. All it does is bites into the nylon and prevents the nut from backing off.

If you scroll down the page in the link I posted, you will see the stock setup. Those guys have the stock parts WAY cheaper than Dodge. Dodge wanted $36 each for the nuts and $4 each for the keys.

It looks like 4016 doesn't have the tabs, it's just the nuts. If you already have the socket get 4015, that will save you the hassle of using blue goo on the axle flanges because it includes gaskets.

rear axle seal

I had no luck with two places NAPA & Dodge,,,,both need to order, anyway, I went home & pulled the other axle out, there is no washer with bent over tabs, just a "pin" that is pushed into the nyloc nut byway of slot on axle housing, dodge tells me this is acceptable, i can use either the "pin" or the washer with tabs, what say you?
thanx
