Grease leaking from rear wheel

The left rear wheel on my '89 CTD appears to be leaking grease at the junction of the brake drum and the hub. It doesn't seem to be leaking from the inside of the drum. Does this assembly come apart or do I have to replace it? Thanks for the advice.

Not sure on 89s ,I would think its the same as my 93. You will need to pull the axle and remove the rear spindle nuts and remove the drum assembly. It sounds like either a wheel seal or brake cylinder went bad.

You'll have to pull off the drum to check it. If it is a leaking brake cylinder, it will be coming out at the ends of the cylinder. You will also probably notice it dripping downwards. If this is the case, you're in luck because it's cheap to fix.

If it's leaking around where trhe axle comes out of the tube, it's a seal, and is more of a pain in the butt to do, as well as potentiall more expensive. If you leav it awhile before fixing it your brakes will be affected as well. They will lock up for no reason at that wheel. If you fix it, I'd suggest doing the brakes anyways, especially if they are contaminated. Good luck.
