getreg 360

is the getreg 360 a good manual tranny for these trucks? i priced out what i want to do for an auto and it equals about the same for a standard, so is the getreg a good tranny, i was thinking nv4500 but i hear they are costly to rebuild as well as pricy to get, what do you think?

I've had three previous trucks with the 'rag and had no real problems with them, except for one that i let run dry and fried
Some of the parts for them are getting hard to find, such as the gear bearings, but overall they are a good tranny.
The biggest problem with them is that they are designed to be lubricated by a 'splash' method, there is a gear that sits down in the oil resiovior that flings oil over the rest of the works..
if you let it go dry, it will over heat very quickly and melt bearings and gears( what I did). Most guys over fill the 'rag by a quart and a half, to help it lube better.
There are a lot of guys on here putting some serious power though the getrag with no problems, and I would have to say based on my personal experience that it is a fine tranny... would much rather have it than my current auto....

The Getrag overall is pretty good. Saying that though as it turns out mine is apart on my work bench right now for a re-bearing. Before I owned the truck it wasn't shown much love, low levels and rough use. The parts will be here Tuesday to make it new again.

Here this is from this thread: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ing+getrag+dry

Got there, parked and found that it now wouldn't "disengage" when shifted to neutral....I was slightly concerned at this point. When I got home, I drained the tranny and found NO fluid in it!!!!
But no drips or obvious leaks either. I was stumped.
I started asking around on here, and the consensus was that the synchros were probably shot and perhaps the shifter forks as well. No one hazarded a guess as to were the oil may have gone tho......
Soooo. called around to the local shops and got estimates ranging from $3800 to $1800 on rebuilding the tranny.
Finally got a mechanic buddy to call a friend of a friend who agreed to do it for $450 labor, if I supplied the parts.
Ordered a bearing/seal kit from TransPart warehouse in Fla.
And got a shifter assembly from our classifieds here. Decided that since the tranny was gong to be out, and the clutch was the factory original with 200K on it, I should probably replace it. Ordered a Rally towing clutch from Standard Transmission and off it all went to the shop.

Day one......."Sir, this is Kevin from the shop calling about your Dodge. The main shaft appears to have gotten slightly warm...2nd and third gears are welded to the main shaft and the 3-4 synchro assembly as well. The caged needle bearings are ruined and we have no source for them. What should we do?
Another call to Standard Transmission and the needed parts are en-route via FedEx Express....

Day 2 "Sir? Kevin again... the new parts got here, but one of the needle bearings is used and ruined, and we are missing a thrust washer...
Another call to Standard and we get that straight, new parts enroute.

Day 4 Sir? Kevin here..... No we haven't found anymore problems with the tranny, Did I tell you we found all your oil in the spacer between the transfer case and the transmission? It appears the transfer case needs a new input shaft seal and a new gasket. Oh, and the input yoke is grooved from the bad seal, but we may be able to drive a sleeve on it... I'll let you know......

Day 5... CD?Kevin here... we got the sleeve on the input yoke, should work fine. By the way, the rear main oil seal is leaking just a little, it would only be another day in the shop to replace it while we are here... should we do it?

Evening of day 5---- sitting here pulling my hair out, afraid that any minute the phone will ring and Kevin's cheerful voice will tell me that the widget has fallen out of the what-sit-majigee and it will only cost me my next born child and another day in the shop to fix it!!!
My costs of not regularly checking the oil level in my tranny so far has been:
Seal/Bearing kit--------$250.00
Shifter Assy-------------$227.00
Clutch Kit---------------$405.00
Main shaft and gears----$602.17
Rear main Seal kit-------$85.00
Transfer case seal kit-----$48.00
Labor(so far)--------------$832.00
Total costs to date--------$ 2449.00

So boys and girls.... remember to check your fluid levels!!!!
