getrag leaking
getrag leaking
The getrag on My dodge is leaking on the yoke area seems like I can remove the bolts to get to this seal is this right? If yes does anyone have the part #?
Also I plan to refill it, is there anything special I can use? I rather not order online and buy local like advance auto, napa or autozone. I also know synthetic is considered better, right?
Btw how much should I buy.
Thank You.

I didn't see but there is oil dark on the frame not engine oil next to the tail of the tranny. To overfill I just use a higher fill hole than the regular one on the transmission right? pto?
I have a couple pics here and I'm curious about one that I marked, what is this thing the back up light sensor or what?
Thank You.

That's the speed sensor. I overfill mine either with a side cover bolt hole or remove the shifter and pour it in. Mine was leaking at the yoke and I found the nut loose that holds the yoke on but my seal was fairly new. Your seal is more than likely old and hardened.
CHECK THE BIG NUT; they do back off, sometimes with costly results.
I use five-quarts of Mobil 5W-30 Full-Synthetic in all of my Getrags.
A street-ell installed permanently in the fill-plug hole will permit pouring in the five quarts and the plug can be used to plug the ell; this allows a means of checking the fluid level.

You are thinking about the "other" big nut, and yes, the fifth-gear nut does back off in the NVs; the Getrags aren't immune to this either and there was a plague of it on a lot of low-mileage Getrags, way back at the beginning.
BUT, the big nut we are concerned with right now is the one that holds the U-joint yoke onto the rear of the transmission, assuming it is a 2WD.
This same nut is also on the rear (and front) of a 4WD transfer-case and equally susceptible to backing off.
It seems like it requires something like a 2-5/16 thin-wall socket, maybe bigger/littler.

Ok, where can I get this socket? Is it something I can get locally at the autoparts store.
The seals I need can I order them from any parts store or this is also a cummins only seal kind of deal?
Thank You.

I found a plain old 3/4-drive thin-wall that would fit in one of the big socket-sets at the shop.
It doesn't require anything special, just thin-wall; and, a socket large enough will most likely be at least 3/4-drive.
The seals are not a Cummins thing, but a Getrag thing.
Most likely, your parts-man can match a seal to the old one when you take it in.
IIRC, the nut is much smaller than 2 5/16. More like 22mm or 1 3/8 maybe. Should be a size socket all of us should have if we own a 1st gen. The seal would be easily bought from a drivetrain dealer such as www.zbag.com. If you're nice and call them, maybe they would give the part number off the seal that is in their rebuild kit and you could cross it. Or if someone has the kit or whats left of a rebuild kit, say a 4wd getrag owner, all the kits come with both 2wd and 4wd rear seals, they could get you the number.
I'll check the nut and buy the socket if necessary. The seal I'll buy from the link You posted since I don't have a tranny shop I can trust near Me, then I'll post the part # for You guys.
