Getrag cooler

Ive had several folks ask me to post some info on what I did to held my Getrag keep its cool...

I have two pics I'll attach, they aren't the best but you will get a good idea...

I used the PTO plate to install 4 fittings. One fitting was added on the lower part of the cover to pull the fluid out of. As the fluid exits the lower fitting it goes through a cooler with a fan mounted between the frame and body. As it exits the cooler it goes through the pump, this was done to cool the fluid before going through the pump. After the pump it goes through the upper fitting in the PTO cover which pumps it onto the upper gear set. Both fluid fittings I brazed on the inside for additional assurance against leaks.

Additionally I have a temp sender (between hoses)for the tranny temp gauge and I also have a 203 degree ground type thermal switch (bottom right of pic) from a Nissan as I recall, that completes the relay ground and turn the pump and fan on automatically.

During my hauling years I used 50 weight synthetic gear oil in the trans. It works great but if you are in cold climates or shut your truck off a lot I wouldn't recommend it. It makes the trans a bit stiffer to shift until the fluid is warmed up. Other than that a good synthetic engine oil works fine.

When I drain and fill the trans, I pull the lower hose off and put a plug on the fitting. Shove the hose end in the new fluid and ground the relay and let the pump do its job. I leave the OEM fill plug out until it starts to run out, then put the plug in and add another 1/2 quart. Then quickly pull the plug and reinstall the lower hose...

Sorry for the grime and bad pics, the coolers been there for about 700K miles...

I was rebuilding the trans around 100K or less w/o cooler. When I added the cooler it was 200K plus... When the trans was pulled before the cooler you could see how the heat was a factor afterwards it was simply just breaking with no signs of heat.

I recommend you pull that getrag asap and replace that clutch. I noticed it is a cheap stamped cover, not a burly cast iron Sachs clutch. Please see my thread: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...e-t303532.html

why didn't you run a filter with it??? also on the bottom hose why not put a shut of valve before the cooler so when you change fluid all you have to do is shut the valve unhook the hose pump new in hook the hose back up open the valve and its alot less mess???

I ran the OEM clutch for ever, the last time I had the trans out I put a later model clutch in it (LUK Pro-gold), havent had a single problem with it and it was 1/2 the price...

As to the filter, dont really need one, its got a magnet on the drain plug and Ive not lost a trans from contamination, just broke hard parts... You can certainly add a valve to the lower hose..

I did it because I hauled in 5th gear and grossed 26K lbs.. The trans doesnt get hot towing in 4th, but 5th will build some heat...
