Getrag cooler

I read a few times this tranny can't tow heavy on 5th gear for long that it will overheat. I was thinking what about a small cooler for this transmission with a oil pump. What kind of pump would work well for this task pumping 10-30w synthetic hot and cold?

Thank You.

If I was towing heavy I'd have a setup like that, with a filter between the pump and cooler.

Here's a pump designed to pump hot oil:

Thank You, I really want to add this to the tranny to reduce the chance to overheat it and brake parts. I thought the getrag was better than the zf-5 tranny that one could tow all day in 5th and never have a problem.

keep it preloaded correctly, 1 qt overfull, (optional: add the coolers you bolt over the pto covers) and don't ever lug it, and stay under the recommended weight on your door jamb and go to town!! 5th is fine on the getrag. Without one of the above prerequisites, SURE it will fail faster than if you towed in 4th!! A Ruined getrag will still drive in 4th!

In 5th on a hill with a heavy load it will scare you. All manuals will run hotter in 5th (and 3rd) because of the gear reduction. 4th (direct drive) is cool because the power does not go through the gears and countershaft.

Even with synthetic lube 280 degrees is about as hot as I'd ever want it. I don't think a temp gauge is needed on a play truck, or even on a bone stock truck that tows. A play truck never runs hard enough to get really hot, and a stocker can't pull hard enough in 5th to really cook the lube - you wind up downshifting to 4th and things stay cool.

I had that pump I got from Summit on my Getrag in a setup much like Wanna describes. It did not last - about 14 months, IIRC. Only ran it for a few minutes at a time once or twice a day. Looked it over after pulling it off and was not impressed with the quality. Plastic head, covers, etc. It was seeing some blowby from the draft tube where it was located, maybe that's what killed it, dunno.

Here's what I'm using now:

It's an old Autopulse fuel pump. A similar one has been on the Gear Vendor for about 8 months now, still working good so far:

Not saying this is the best way to go, but I won't spend another $200 on one of those noisy Tilton pumps when I can find these on Ebay for 20 bucks or less. It doesn't need to make much pressure or run continuously in this application. Just enough to periodically circulate the fluid and keep it clean. When I drained the Getrag to change pumps the oil looked the same as it did when put in over a year earlier.

That's good info. For that price I should put a pump and filter on mine.
