Question fuel shutoff solenoid. need help ASAP!

hi fellas

this is a long post but i need help

im home for the weekend from college because i got a guy thats interested in buying my spare motor. 91 non intercooled 5.9. so we hang it off the excavator with a chain. bleed all the fuel lines, put a wire from the shutoff solenoid to the positive on the battery crank it over and nothing. no spurts but a tiny amount of black smoke is coming out of the turbo. so we give it a tiny shot of ether and she fires off. ran for maybe 2 seconds on the ether.

idk what it is but it seems like its not getting enough fuel to run. so my friend and i do a test. crank the motor over with the injection lines cracked and fuel is shooting out so obviously we have it bled right? we go to his 90 d350 cummins and do the same test. we narrowed it down the the fuel shutoff solenoid. we cracked two injector lines on his truck with the fuel shutoff soleniod disconnected and it spurted the same amount of fuel out the injector line. then we reconnect the fuel shutoff soleniod and the injector line spits out a rediculous amount of fuel. so we think this is the cause. anyone have any ideas?

if so is there a way to remove the fuel shutoff solenoid and just put a plug in so we can get it running to show the guy. (just use the manual shutoff valve to turn the motor off)

anyone have any diagrams of what it looks like, how to remove it, and if it is the problem where can i get one?

i know this is a long thread but i need help

thank you in advance for all info

Justin

No need to find a plug for the fuel solenoid, take the solenoid out, remove the plunger and spring and reinstall.

thanks for the quick reply man. i was just reading over cummins forum and it seems that people take the assembly out (b/c cranking up the pump wears em out or some reason) and install a manual shot cable in its place.

any idea on a thread pattern? im guessing its metric? any diagrams im searching google now

yeah just take the solenoid out, pop out the rubber and spring and install it all back together like you took it apart, wires and all (but without the rubber and spring inside) and then youll need to hook up a choke cable to the mechanical shut off lever... ill post a pic of how i did it.

i got it at the advance auto or where ever... it was like 8 dollars and has worked perfectly for the last year. i like it actually. i can let my truck run with the doors locked and my keys in my pocket. it becomes second nature to use after about 2 days.

I don't see anything in your story that says you had a ground lead to the engine...

Off topic here, but do you actually get more travel from your throttle linkage being set up to the upper hole on the lever? Mine is on the bottom hole, just wondering.

The inside top hole is better, You get more travel easier and doesn't take as much "Pedal" to get it going. moving the rod to the inside hole is a must do mod

I thought the same thing but there must be a ground for it to crank.

yeah. i used the original cables that were with the motor attached to a battery. got it running, called the guy up who wanted to come look at it and he gave me 1300 cash for it. i hated like hell to sell it but i needed the money.

o well thats 1300 i can put into my 92'. whether it be injectors, gauges or whatever haha

the motor is going in a case rubber tire backhoe, the guy likes the pipe that goes from the turbo to the intake that says "dodge ram"
