Talking Finally Did My Valve Adjustment

Well guys I finally did my valve adjustment and it seemed to make a great improvement as far as sound, but I do have a little bit of a light chatter sound, wonder what that could be? All of my valves were loose so it was good that I did it. I was a lot easier then I thought it would be. A total must for anyone who needs to do it

Just thought that I would share

I need to do mine. The new gaskets have been riding behind the seat for months now. Might be dry rotted by the time I get a chance to get to it.

Yeah did mine about 4 months ago. Only one valve was off. Put new gaskets on and slapped everything back together. Didn't change nothing but still runs great.

Started to do mine last weekend but I didn't have a barring tool and I wasn't able to turn the engine by the crankshaft or alt pullys (must mean she's still good and tight!) I'll have to get a tool and try again. Anyone got a good online source?

I got my Barring tool from Cummins. Listen to this you can get just the barring tool from them for about 35 dollars about, but for 48 dollars you can get the whole tool set for valves, oil changes and some other misc. tools. On eBay the kit sells for about 70 dollars but get it from Cummins it is cheaper.

Part Number for tool set 3399869

Hope this helps

I have to stick a cheater pipe on mine to get it to turn by the crank bolts.

I had a 91 that would just slip the alternator belt, both directions. And like an idiot, I sold it.....

Loose valves may cost a little noise and power but it is overly tight ones that are deadly. Burnt valves will eventually result. The fact that your were loose is a good sign. Minimal wear on the valves and seats. When the valves get worn, the clearances become less. Be careful not to set the clearances too tight.
