Fan ?

I was wondering here (outloud)...am I correct in saying that the fan should not turn at all when running or at idle? I do know that the fan clutch when hot will engage, but never really knew if the fan even turns at all at idle or while normal driving down the road.

Problem I am having is I cant get the engine very warm. New thermostat today...195*.... It did make it better, but, then I noticed that the fan was on all the time, even at idle. Made me think to ask the guru's here.

Cardboard is blocking the radiator. I was thinking of pulling the fan off, but never did that before. Will it get too hot if I did that? What all entails pullin just the fan off? TIA

Your fan still spins even when cold. It just "slips" when it's cold...meaning that maybe for every 10 revolutions of the pulley the fan only spins 3-4 times. But when it gets hot the fluid moves out a "locks" up the clutch fan and then you have max cooling...so the fan spins like it a solid fix unit.

You can check your clutch. when cold spin the fan...it should spin about 3/4 to one revolution. Now when the truck is nice a hot shut it down and try spinning it again...should barely move.

Did you install the thermostat correctly, sounds easy enough to install but these have "jiggle pins" that, if not installed correctly can have adverse effects on the cooling system...so I hear.
Mine was the same, NEVER warm I mean never unless pulling 10K up a 10% grade, flushed cooling system new t-stat now I can use the heater!!

I'm running fan-less..... But it's a lot colder here than PA. pull the fan off and just keep an eye on the temp gauge. Running down the road you shouldn't have a problem with getting too hot. With the grille uncovered, I run fan-less up to about 30* or so depending on where I'm going and the kind of traffic I expect.

Where did you get a 195* t-stat?

According to him it was for a CTD, as I asked him twice to make sure, as I wanted the right part the first time. I still have the box/P/N if your interested in more info, send me a pm

If you pull the fan, be careful of how your heater/defroster switch is set. For example, if you pull the truck into your driveway and let it idle while you run in to get a bite to eat, if you left the switch in the defrost position you run a very real risk of overpressuring your A/C system and blowing something.

Certain switch positions engage the A/C compressor and other ones don't. Clearly the defrost ones and the ones with the A/C symbol do. The selections for full front vent and full floor vent do not engage the A/C.

I used to pull the fan on my 1992 truck all the time for the winter, but I don't anymore.

If memory serves me correctly I read somewhere in some other post about fan clutches that you need to store the fan with the fan clutch in an upright position. No firsthand knowledge of this. Mike
