Dexron II or III?

That used to be common practice for the shady used car dealers and gas station mechanics we had a 1953 Buick Roadmaster that had developed a howl in the diff on coast, the dealership mechanic put sawdustin the diff oil to try and silence it instead of replace it, the diff burned out about 6 months later.
Bananas were also used to quiet transmissions, nothing like the smell of acrid gear oil and banana to curl your hair.

Unless it's untaxed, then it's red.

What about making a custom blend? Like half dex 3 and half type F?
Or what If I added the wrong fluid last time I topped up?

The 93 D250 has dollar general DexIII in it and it shifts awesome. Never felt a 518 with 200k shift so firm into 2nd gear It leaks it so fast why should we put good fluid in it LOL.

if the trans does not have a clutch in the converter there should be no problem with type f or any other good name brand fluid. i even got by with f in gm trans with lockup converters for 30 years in the business

My buddy just changed his fluid out, went with the recommended fluid... Turned his torque converter into a slush box. Couldnt even feel the shifts... He has since gone with a type f /hyguard mix and is much happier.
I know that doesnt help the top up situation, but something to consider...

One of the problems with servicing an old transmission especially one with high miles that it could work fine or you could kill it within the first 10 minuets of driving.
My trans works fine and shifts firm but it still has its quirk, it will only slip once every morning and only once half a block from my house and then it will be fine until the next morning, been doing this since January.
It feels like the converter is draining back but even if idled in neutral for 30 seconds it still does it.
