Destroyed seal in transfer case with Dexron III?
I changed the fluid in my transfer case this weekend and filled it with Dexron III ATF fluid. Tonight I go out and find half of it on the ground! It is now leaking at the shaft seal right at the companion shaft. I guess it's possible that it has been leaking all along and that the old fluid was just below the seal, but I forgot to check the level before I drained it. Is it possible that the Dexron III (Manual recommends Dexron II or ATF Plus) ate the seal or has it just been bad all along and I just discovered it?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I'll call Dodge tomorrow if all else fails.
The truck is a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins with the 241 transfer case.

I think it has been leaking for a while now. Dexron III will not eat the seal, Besides i have'nt seen Dexron II in year's. I used Amsoil Universal ATF had have had no problem's with leak's.

Re:Destroyed seal in transfer case with Dexron III?
Thnaks Mr.45. I agree that it has to have been a bad seal all along. I just bought the truck not too long ago and am glad I haven't used the transfer case much. It's probably only been about half full for who knows how long.
I'll call Dodge and see what kind of damage I'm looking at to replace the seal.
Thanks,
Dan

new seals and a new flange nut, shouldn't be to bad. You don't need any special tools to get the job done. A seal puller(needle nose or similar tool and a socket to push new seal into place). Be careful not to gouge or scratch any machined sufaces and your in like flint. Good luck
