Axle spline count on the Dana 70
I still have the equipment list sticker for my truck that states Spicer 70 axle, 3.5 ratio and limited slip differential.
It does not say HD or U on the sticker. Does anyone know how to tell exactly what this is and what the axle spline count is, 32 or 35? I don't want to pull an axle just to find out if I don't have to.
Oh yeah, it's 2WD.

dodgenstein is correct, that is the commonly what you will find, but I have seen variations. The older axles seem to be 35 spline with the studs and lock washers, then Dodge seemed to phase in a lighter duty 32 spline axle shaft.
If it was me and I needed to make sure I was getting it right, like ordering a locker for it or the like, I would pull an axle shaft.

Just to showcase that the bolt on and the stud style axle shafts come in both splines counts. My '91.0 Poncho has 35 splines with one bolt on axle shaft and one stud style axle shaft. I am guessing one was replaced during its life, rather than it being built that way from the factory. Or they literally ran out of stud style axle shafts while building my truck.

Also, don't believe everything you read on the build sheet. Mine listed a Cummins motor AND an NP208 transfer case. I don't think that an NP208 was ever available behind a Cummins and I definitely have a 205.
There a about a million different configurations of Dana 70. The rule of thumb is good but i'd pull an axle and count to be sure.

Correct. If it was just a question of locating the correct mounting hardware, I would have done that. I found the mismatch axle shafts styles when the axle was getting refreshed for the trip to Carlisle two years ago.

I was asking because I'm looking around for parts to rebuild the LSD. Making sure what is available. I really need to take it apart before I order any parts though. I drained some gear oil out and added two bottles of friction modifier to it yesterday and it has quieted down a lot so just going to hold out until I get the Accent together and tagged so I have something else to drive.
