93 w250 upgrade questions
93 w250 upgrade questions
I have a 93 w250 with 160000 miles on her, pretty much stock except banks exhaust and pyro, boost, tyranny temp, and a tach. I've been doing a bunch of reading on here and am thinking the first few mods I should do are
1. 3200 gov spring
2. Fuel pin
3. Turn up pump
4. Advance timing
5. BHAF
Any other suggestions anyone can give me, I see the hungry diesel has a kit with a fuel pin, gov spring and a lift pump, is the lift pump a good idea?. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Get gauges, especially and EGT mounted pre turbo before you go dialing up the fuel. Your turbo will thank you. Generally EGT's in excess of 1300 degrees will melt the blades of the turbine and fry other stuff as well like pistons. A boost gauge is helpful also. A tach is nice to tell how well the governor spring is doing.
When I got my truck the fuel had been turned up quite a bit because it was used for towing. There were no gauges. How it didn't fry things I don't know. Now I have gauges and a rebuilt stock tuned pump and I upgraded the turbo as well.

ridlangus123, I see you filled out your sig but your first gen is not there. Edwin must have been nodding off when he read your post as I see you already have gauges. That said is your truck going to be more of a toy or are you planning on working the truck? I would do the gov spring and fuel pin first then drive it for a week or so while you dial your afc in and get a good idea of what those changes do, if you have the stock airbox drill some holes in it for better airflow at the same time.
The kit from Eric is a good one and buying all three is a pretty good savings over getting them one at a time and that way you can install all three at the same time. the real power starts when you start turning up the full fuel screw ( personally I would go 3/4 to 1 turn over stock and then retune your afc) Just remember to have a piece of 2x6 or similar to cover the intake at the turbo if you get runaway ... Happy tuning and remember once you start it's all down hill from there

Gov springs are particularly nice on stick shifted trucks. I didn't see if you have an auto or manual truck.
If you have an auto truck you might want to start reading up one upgraded torque converters and the like as all that added power will be tough on the old A-518 if it is dead stock.

That is a solid assumption. I know a few manual Cummins guys with temp gauges, but not nearly as many as the auto guys I know with them.
To the OP. Save some of the power mod budget for transmission expenses or upgrades to deal with the new HP.

Unless you are mechanically inclined and have a good place to do it, I don't recommend the governor spring. It is very easy to loose the small parts and/or damage the fulcrum by forgetting to back out the fuel screw. Instead I'd suggest doing the throttle full travel adjustment. It's easy and doesn't put your injection pump at risk.
