I remember the Dodge-Mitsubishi. I thought about buying one at the time, but Chrysler pulled the plug before I got around to it. It made me a little nervous about buying the Cummins, because I wasn't sure they were serious about it either. I finally bought a Cummins in '91 and never regretted it.

A couple of other notes about the other engines mentioned:

The Diesel in the Ford Ranger was originally a Mazda. Later ones may have been Mitsubishi.

The Diesel in the Scout was indeed a Nissan SD33, naturally aspirated in the early ones, later turbocharged. Oddly enough, Chrysler imported that engine and marketed it as a marine and industrial engine. I had one that a previous owner had installed in a '77 Ford F100, and it had Chrysler-Nissan cast into the valve cover.

The Craigslist ad was wrong about the Dodge Mitsubishi being the first factory Diesel pickup. I had what may have been the first factory Diesel pickup in North America, a '59 Mercedes 319d. I'm always reminded of it when someone complains about a lack of power. It was a 1-ton dually with the same 1.8 litre, 40 hp engine used in the 180d cars and Thermo-King reefers.

A lot of people do not like or cannot get used to the feel of hydroboost brakes, they are the closest to the feel of having air brakes, hydroboost has little to no feedback between the pedel and the hydraulics, even with a lot of weight a panic stop brings a lot of tire smoke.

To test a hydroboost system you hold your foot to the floor and then start your engine, the pedal will drop away under your foot if it is functioning properly.
You also don't want to unnecessarly sit with your foot pressing hard after you are stopped, it can produce extremly high pressures in the brake system.

I love the sound and feel of air brakes.

I drove various types of fire trucks for years, all of them with air brakes. Talk about stopping, man could they stop. When I first started driving them years ago, we had 5 speed crash boxes, all with non-synchromesh double clutches. When you were first driving them, it was very hard to downshift, so you relied heavily on the air brakes. After some practice, you didn't even use the clutch, up or down, once you got going...Mark

Truck must be so so slow with 4x4, Auto and A/C!

Dodge only put that engine in the full size pickups in 78&79 because people complained how underpowered they were
