Unhappy 1st gen auto trans help

Howdy first gen guys.

My uncle has a 93 2wd with an auto. Well at 165K miles it looks like the trans is giving up. He gave me a call from southern Iowa today to see if I knew anyone who could assist. He bought it in 93 (first owner had it less than 6mo) and it has not worked very hard, just very little towing of a small 5th wheel and a lot of hi way driving. It is 100% stock.
A local (Iowa) shop quoted hem a little over $2250 for the trans/converter combo + install.
Is that good?
The body has some scars from a couple of minor fender benders and the paint is faded and pealing. He is trying to decide if he should part her out or put the trans in. What do you guys think? What would the cummins be worth if he parts her out?

Thanks for your help
Allen

Depending on who's buying, the motor would easily be worth 15-1800 with all the accesories. I would say (and I'm sure others here would agree) get a performance tranny and crank that fuel screw, that truck's just a baby with those miles!

Why does he think the trans is dying? Did he lose overdrive? If so, it's probably the TPS.

Even if it's the trans, it's worth fixing. He'll easily get another 100 years out of 'er.

The local shop told him "it has a bab bearing" . How they can tell without pulling it apart I am not sure. He did take it to another shop and they said it needed a new trans as well. It still drives but I was at work and did not get to ask him any details. Ill give him a call and get more info.

Just talked to him and he is going to replace the trans. It is making some very bad sounds and slipping a bunch.

When he visits this summer I would love to pick your brains on some low cost mods. I think a 75 year old retired guy would like some more power!

Thanks Again

With those miles, the engine is about the only thing he'll get any money from. If he really wanted to sell it, he'd get more to fix it then sell it. I think he'd come out ahead to fix it and keep it, don't give the bank and insurance all your money on a newer vehicle. Even if he had to do brakes or something a week later. It's paid for, it'll have a new tranny AND a good engine. Mines ugly too, but it's nice not having the eye start twitching whenever somebody leaves a shopping cart next too it.

I wonder if you called DTT to see if they have any people in that state to have them check it out.

I agree, keep the truck, mod the truck a little, throw a better tranny in there and drive it forever. It will be handed down to his kid's, kids.

The perfect opportunity to put an 'upgraded' tranny and convertor in. (DTT or equiv) That should be one of the most important upgrades for performance, and allow the future engine mods to be utilized. With stock tranny, you will be limited in accessing power of future mods.
