very unresponsive 12v under 1500rpm

Im a noobie and I need some help. I just recently turned up my 97 2500 4x4 and I slid the plate all the way forward and adjusted the starwheel screw all the way towards the passenger side. Iam very pleased with my high rpm performance (above 1500 rpms) but the bottom end is very sluggish. I have tried to change the starwheel screw several times but get little change. Also there is only white smoke comming out the back and no black under 1500. Any advice would be appreciated.

Pump Timing. I did mine today and set timing to 15.5 Degrees, or 5.45mm, BTDC on my 98 which is SPL 2175. It was set to +-13degrees which obviously doesn't work when its cold.

A world of difference. no hesitation, no white smoke, no spluttering, less noise (!), and unless I imagined it, the truck warmed up better than ever before. Heat has always been a problem since I have been in this **** -5F weather.

Two hour job (my first time ever) and a savings of $300......

Sounds like your pump timing has slipped.

How do you adjust the pump timing?? I am having the same problem. Not very responsive from take off. I take off and it is sluggish and it seems like it slowly builds up power and then bam its gone

Re:very unresponsive 12v under 1500rpm

Sounds very much like your pump timing has sliped

What I suspect has happened is that the timing has slipped a bit. The 12 valve trucks with the P series (inline) injection pumps will slowly back the timing down to less than 9 degrees over time. This was attributable to Cummins using an incorrect torque specification on the nut that holds the timing gear to the pump shaft.

Take your truck to a diesel speciality shop and have the timing set up to somewhere between 15.5 and 17 degrees, and the nut torqued to 160 foot lbs, and your problems will likely disappear

dsl ...

First off ...... take a step back .... did this symptom begin right after you played with your plate? While true these can slip time .... it's not a common event.

What process did you use when you slid your plate? What did you use/do to keep the plate aligned?

There are alot of variables you could've created here...... need more info from you!

Re:very unresponsive 12v under 1500rpm

Whoa!

This is a normal condition. The 215 HP (cpl 2175) engine has a very "peaky" torque curve. Its in the pump. They are dogs under 1500, in fact, don't really take off until 1750 usually, with peak torque at about 1900 rpm.
I hear there is a pump mod that can be done to fix it, or a new pump. I believe the 215 has a different camshaft as well, so its quite a different engine than the 180hp.
I had a 1994 before this truck, and loved that low end torque it had, but this 1997 (5 speed) has little torque down low.
I've talked to many other owners with these 215hp 12v engines who report the same thing. :'(

Re:very unresponsive 12v under 1500rpm

I never expected to see this post again :. A lot has happened since the old " Think Ill just turn her up" days. What had happened is the timing had slipped as well as my valves were in serious need of some adjustment. After I fixed that everything was wonderfull and then the un thinkable occured... I was bitten by the bug :'( ;D ;D ;D. Now here I am a set of injectors, a KSB1 ,a 13" SBC OFE,a #10, and a set of HONKIN 5" STACKS later, not to mention a lot lighter wallet :.

Re:very unresponsive 12v under 1500rpm

I'll bet that thing flys now! enjoy ;D
I'm trying to be conservative about bombing.
Alas, just added a Scotty II today and sure would like just a lil bigger injectors, clutch, etc...
My excuse is that I can slip the clutch now, so I need a new clutch, and of course 5th gear fix in the trans, then can't hurt to have a little more power to pull and climb the mountains. Well, I think I'm in trouble already!
But its so fun!
