Q? KDP

This might sound stupid, (lord knows it won't be the 1st time)
but what is a KDP? It sounds like something I don't want to break. And this is the first time I heard about such a thing.
I pretty familar with gas engines, but I'm at a loss/
thanks
P.S I read through some of the post's and gathered it has to do with timing.

Re:Q? KDP

The KDP has nothing to do with timing. It is a locating dowel pin to locate the front case to the engine block. THis pin has a tendency to fall out and can cause major damage to the front case. Hench the name Killer Dowel Pin or KDP

Hope that helps .. if you want to know more about it send me a PM ... I've fixed well over 40 of them ...

Re:Q? KDP

Its a alignment dowel thats press fit into the block so when the front gear housing is installed it keeps the alignment of the housing until the bolts are put in and torqued...the problem is durning 94-98 either the dowels where not sized correct or the press fit wasnt tight enuff and this dowel would work loose...when this happen the dowel will fall out onto the timing gear and either get ground up by the gears causing damage ...or the speed of the gear sends this dowel thru the rear gear housing causing it to crack open...if that happen then its a major repair bill to replace the rear gear housing $2000-3000
The other way to repair this dowel is to remove the front gear cover and be sure the dowel is seated in place and make a tab that uses a near by bolt to cover the dowel which will keep it from falling out this repair takes longer and costs more then the KDP Jig Kit repair
Here a link to using the KDP kit to stop this dowel (Killer Dowel Pin)

http://www.phantomcycle.com/kdpfix.html

KDP tabs are availible from Piers Diesel Reaserch if you don't want to wait for a jig to come around.
