Help adjusting valves...

OK guys can't get the timing pin to go in or come out.Don't know how anyone can get their and up there to do anythig with it with that PS hose in the way.Trying the method of watching #6 valves one going up one going down to get TDC on #1 , does this have to be right ont the money ie.. the exact time when the valves exchange directions???? I can't even get a .09 under the intake and a .22 will go under the exaust at that point. I'm scared I'm not at TDC. Need input. Thanks

adjusting valves

there is a ring holding down the timing pin. pull the ring out with a pick, and use a pair of pliers to pull out the pin. you can turn the engine over with a 15mm socket on the crank bolts. put your finger in the bore where the pin came out, and you'll feel a hole on the back of the injector pump gear. make sure the hole is centered in the timing pin bore. check with your finger. pinch the #1 cylinder rocker arms and see if there is play. wiggle back and forth. mark the crank pulley on both sides of the ckp sensor. adjust valves. 1 in 1 ex. 2 in 3 ex 4 in 5 ex. bar the engine over 360 degrees. align marks on the crank pulley, so they'll look just the way they did when you begun. adjust 2 ex 3 in 4ex 5 in 6in 6 ex. you can call me at 931-652-0078 if you have any questions

you dont need to be exactly on overlap. the valves will never get looser if that makes any sence, as long as a rocker is loose you can adjust it and it only takes two revolutions to do all. just noticed jstrdiesel explained it.

OK I think I understand , the over lap on 6 happens just for a second , so if I stop when I see them both moving # 1 should be at TDC and should be able th adjust them . That was my main concern if there was any play in the TDC adjustment and is sounds like there is , so the question is why would anyone play with the POS timing pin if it doesn't have to be dead on TDC . I have big hands and can't get at that pin . I hate that pin lol. Would my valves be that far out ???? Intake is really tight

unless someones been in there before your rockers shouldnt get tighter unless they were left loose. adjust valves when your at #1overlap or #6overlap.

Well got er done I think , I'm pretty pickey tryed to get them all the exact same , spent 3 hrs on it lol , almost drove myself crazy. When I rolled the engine over to re check they never seem to be the same as when you adjusted them either a little looser or tighter. Did this 3-4 times readjusting , so what you guys are saying is it deff. doesn't matter where you stop on crossover the valves to be adj. should not move any. By my findings I find it hard to belive ,or was it the beer.

the valves to be adjusted should be loose. if the rocker is tight you're not on the right stroke. some rockers will be loose but not at the point where you want to adjust. this is the way i do it.... turn the engine over until #6 is in overlap, exhaust closing as intake just starts to open. adjust both valves for #1, adjust #2 intake, #3 exhaust, #4 intake, and #5 exhaust. turn the engine over until #1 is in overlap, adjust #2 exhaust, #3 intake, #4 exhaust, #5 intake, and both on #6.
