I believe you started out right, but you don't go 360 degrees, I believe you only go 180 degrees to finish the rest of the valves

no it is 360*the following might help
Once you set the dampener to 12:00 and verify that #1 cyl rockers are loose then adjust the valves in this order.
Intake on cylinders 1-2-4 and exhaust on 1-3-5.

Spin the dampener 360# clockwise back to 12:00 then adjust,

Intake 3-5-6 and exhaust 2-4-6.

I believe the tolerance you want on the intakes are .010 and on the exhaust .026 on your 06. I set them so that I have friction on the feeler gauge. Reset torque on the jam nut to 18 ft#.

You can go in the firing order if you want too but there is no need for it.

The entire job takes around 1-1.5 hours, if its your first time it will be a little longer. Do yourself a favor and get feeler gauges with a 45* bend in them, it makes it a LOT easier.

Nope you go 360, the cam set-up in these is called one half turn, for every 360 the crank turns the cam turns one half turn.

what ^^^ he said with the exception that your exhaust should be set to .020. remember to do this to a cold engine.
And a extra tip, scribe your hood latch and take that thing off. your chest and stomach will thank you later.

Is there a reason you set yours to .020 for exhaust instead of .026?

For an 04.5, that's what the specs are (or use to be). I guess they changed them to .026 for the 06+ models, but there is no differance in that aspect of the engine from 04.5 to 07 5.9L.

EGR/3rd injection event engines run hotter internally. the exhaust valve lash spec was increased to mitigate that aspect of engine operation.

On the earlier CR's the spec was .020 for exhaust but later changed to .026. Theory is the valve is closed slightly longer for better heat transfer from the valve to the valve seat.

mikeyB i think you are correct on this but i have heard that a component change of the valve seats was made for the 06 was the reason for the change. so far no one at cummins has been able to tell me witch is correct. we replaced all of our cams in the 06's with pdr cams and i set them to 0.020 not reolizing there was a change, i ran one of them about 30,000 miles before i found out about it. i reset them to 0.026 untill i find out if we ase correct. with the smarty jr , pdr cam, 50 hp nozzles and exhaust i am running 300* cooler than stock

no the lifters ase mechanical, we adjust our lifters about every 250,000 miles. we changed the camshafts out in our 06's to get rid of the in- cylinder egr, two had less than 2,000 miles on them when we did. this was in 06 and i was so use to using 0.020 that i never thought to check for a change
