Do you have to get the right pump for your engine?

That may seem like a dumb question and maybe it is but I was internet shopping for a replacement p7100 pump and there seems to be some choices on the type of p7100 to get. There are listings for auto or manual and the hp ratings go from 160 to 215. What are the differences and is there a better than stock choice for my 97 12v with an automatic tranny? Mos tof the companies have a core charge so am I stuck buying the exact replacement pump?

When my 160 hp '95 pump needed rebuilding I replaced it with a 215, no problem even with stock injectors.
They gave me the same core charge as if I had traded for another 160.
Got mine here http://www.usdieselparts.com/category.cfm?Category=1009

Thanks for the link what about the auto vs. manual aspect. I have an auto trans now but may want to use this motor in a truck with a manual later.

The autos and manuals have different pumps from the factory because they of different power curves stock. If you want to keep the truck completely "stock", then you would want to run the exact same pump. If not, then any pump will work. Most people try to replace their old pump with a 215 because it is the easiest pump to get decent horsepower out of. I would recommend not getting something like a 160, it won't flow that much fuel.

You want a 96-98 manual pump, that would be the 215hp.
96-98 automatic is a lower hp rating, 180hp.

Dartmouth,

I think you should rethink your statement. The 160HP pump has all the potential of any pump out there.

Mine makes me happy, day after day, mile after mile.

Ronnie, think what Dartmouth was saying is the 160 takes a little more work to hit higher hp than a 215.
With the right parts though they can be equal.

infidel is right. About any pump can be "massaged" for more fuel flow. Just don't discount the lower horse power pumps.

Actually, what is the street price for a 215 HP pump compared to a 160 HP pump? The demand for the 215 pump might make the 160 more attractive.

Then you have money left over to make the 160 flow.
