47RE Transmission Fluid Capacity
Getting ready to change the tranny fluid for the first time. For the life of me, I cannot find the capacity. From reading threads, I get the impression it is anywhere from 10 to 17 quarts.

I am planning on doing a complete change as I intend on changing to Amsoil. Anyone have a good figure so I can order the correct amount of fluid?

Re:47RE Transmission Fluid Capacity
Has anybody tried the "Trick* of disconnecting the "Hot" line going to the transmission cooler, connecting a hose to it, and running it into a bucket, and then turning the truck on, and cycling the truck through the gears until bubbles start coming out?

I've heard of this being done on other trannies, but haven't heard it being done on 47RH/47RE/48RE trans.

Thanks,
Merrick Cummings Jr

Re:47RE Transmission Fluid Capacity
Everything I have read says to change the tranny oil when it is hot. Why would that be. My 'baby' is my third vehicle and sits for days at a time. When I fire her up, it always takes a bit for the fluid to get pumped back into the TC and I suppose the VB.

Seems to me it would be best to drain it after a few days since all of the fluid has naturally drained out of those parts.

Would it be possible to open her up and just let it sit for a couple of days to drain the cooler instead of loosening a line and pumping the fluid out?

Re:47RE Transmission Fluid Capacity
Just had mine totally Flushed, it took 16 quarts. But, if you are just dropping the pan it should be about 6 to 7 quarts. Hope this helps.

Re:47RE Transmission Fluid Capacity
I removed the line that goes in the rear drivers side, which is the return from the cooler. I put a peice of clear tubing on the line and twisted a peice of wire over it to keep it from comming off. I had mesured the fluid that came out when I droped the pan and put that much in to start. I ran the engine with it in neutral for about 60 seconds at a time. I measured the amount of fluid that was pumped out and added that amount every time. When I was satisfied all of the old stuff was out I put the line back on and brought the fluid level up to the full mark.
