Auto Transmission capacity and fluid...

1 - what's the capacity of my '92 Auto / OD transmission?
2 - what type of fluid should I use?

Fluid type is specified as ATF +3. But you can run whatever you want depending on what sort of feel you want from the shifting. Type F ATF will produce the firmest shifts. And I think Dexron/Mercon is the slickery-est, producing the softest shifts. I can't recommend that.

As for how much...I can't remember. It seems like a lot. I have a double deep Mag Hytec pan on mine...seems like a total fluid change was around 20 quarts. That would of course include fluid in the torque converter and the cooling circuit. I think the pan is 6 quarts extra(?) so maybe 14 quarts for a total change? I can check when I get home.

Thanks. I can't seem to find info on capacity anywhere - I have searched a LOT. Hoping to do a fluid change this weekend and need to find out how much to buy!

Ok. Here's the sequence I use:

Total is usually 17 Quarts - Drain Pan, Add 10 Quarts, Remove Rear Transmission Line & Hook up hose, Run Engine in Neutral and Remove 4 Quarts, Add 4 Quarts, Run Engine in Neutral and Remove 2 Quarts, Add 3 Quarts.

This drains the torque converter and cooling circuit of the old fluid. Keep in mind that this for a Mag-Hytek Double Deep pan. It's 4 quarts over the stock pan. So total capacity for my system is around 17 quarts. Total for a stock system would be around 12 or 13 quarts.

So procedure for a normal pan would be:

Total is usually 13 Quarts - Drain Pan, Add 6 Quarts, Remove Rear Transmission Line & Hook up hose, Run Engine in Neutral and Remove 4 Quarts, Add 4 Quarts, Run Engine in Neutral and Remove 2 Quarts, Add 3 Quarts.

Type F fluid isn't thicker than Dexron. It's "stickier." It has "friction modifiers that makes it "grabbier" on the clutch materials than other fluids. That's how you end up with firmer shifts.
