Fluid Capacity Of My Transmission
Fluid Capacity Of My Transmission
I changed my trans filter and fluid according to the info in my 1999 Mopar Service Manuel. (I just lowered the pan and then let the trans drain) The manuel said I should only get 4 quarts out but I got 9 quarts. Then on the refill procedure, the manuel said I should only put 3 pints in it initially, then start the rig and add to the min mark on the dipstick then drive and get it warm and add to the maximum mark. After I put the 3 pints in and started it, I added another 2 gallons which I would expect based on how much I drained out but why does the manuel say a filter and fluid change should only net 4 quarts and on first fill add only 3 pints? My friend told me the best Transmission fluid to use is ATF+4 even though the manuel recommends ATF3. Any opinions?

Maybe you have a double dish pan on it. If your manual says use ATF+3
use that it's a lot cheaper than ATF+4 by any chance did you drain the valve
body are torque converter?

Thanks for the input olratlr. How would I know if I had a "double Dish pan"? As far as I know I didn't drain the torque convertor or the valve area. I just dropped the pan and let whatever was in the trans and pan drain out. I was using fully synthetic trans fluid (Amsoil) to get longer service over the ATF+3 but my friend, who is a cummins pro, said I would also get longer service if I switched to ATF+4
