Where to find tow ratings for used trucks
I'm in the market for a used truck to tow a fairly big load. I will be towing an RC-100 with a mulching head. The tractor and head will be 12K plus and then weight of trailer. I'm figuring close to 16K total. Is there some place I can find the tow ratings on older trucks? Probably no older than 1996. I've been searching the web, but haven't found anything yet. Also, how do you find the axle ratio on a truck. Does it have an axle code listed in the door jam or where? And is there a list of axle codes somewhere? Thanks.
Wow, I thought my tow ratings were more like 13k... The Trailer life chart shows me well under 10k ? This is a 1 ton dually diesel 4x4, hell my little 98 Jeep grang cherokee could tow over 5k.....
I guess I am skunked, as I just purchased a new Raptor 299MP, weighs 10100 dry, with gear and toys I am looking at 12500.....
edit looks like I am going to have to move up to a friggin Freightliner or a Pete !

What's the problem ? If it's the gear ratio that can be changed . The GCVW for duallies is 23,000 . You take 500 off that for starters if you have 4wd . You should be able to pull 13,000 .You may want to add air lift .

I was just commenting on the Trailer life 2003 tow ratings guide, as it indicated that I could only tow about 9500 lbs.
Anyway, the pin on the Raptor is 2400lbs, about 1100lbs more that my Wildcat. Do you think I will need air bags ? I have had 2 tons of wood pelets in the back and the suspension was not sqauted...
So you saying that as long as I am under my GCWR, that I would be OK ? The reason I am fussing, is that god forbid I had a serious wreck, if the insurance co found that I was overloaded, thay may not cover the damage. Don't like to plame games with these folks.

You probably won't need the air . If you're looking at pulling even 13,0000 and your truck shouldn't weigh more than 8,000 you're well under your gvwr. There's guys out there pulling a lot more than that .

my 97 is rated (by dodge) for only 18,000 gcwr. and it is a 5 spd 4.10 geared rig
I'm registered for 25,400 tho.........
I just pulled 18,500 gcwr from western Mi to Va, and the truck hardly knew it was back there once up to speed.
i do need a bigger turbo, injectors shove too much fuel for the boost...she can run warmer than I'd like on long climbs. drop to 4th and all is well
