Stock or Not

I'm in the process of buying a 30/ft 5th wheel, thats weighs about 9800 lbs empty and maybe 11500, fully loaded. I currently pull a 28/ft, 8500 lbs Travel Trailer with no problems. So my question is can I pull that much weight with my "stock" Auto Transmission. I really don't want to spend any more money on the truck. My wife would kill me if I told her.. Honey, after spending 30,000.00 plus for my truck & a cool $ 35,000.00 on the new 5th wheel, I need to spend more money (that I don't have) to trick out the transmission :'(.. Yeah that would happen... What do ya think ???

Tommy

Re:Stock or Not

Personally, I would slap at least an EZ on it. Check for a used one. You should be able to get that at a decent price! ;D I'm sure some of the veteran towers can help you out more.

Tony

I would opt for a set of gauges at the very least.
Pyro (EGT), Fuel pressure and Auto Tranny Temp, if you're planning on towing heavy. That way you can keep an eye on what's happening before the "Idiot lights" tell you there's a problem.

Re:Stock or Not

Tommy,
My 95 tranny is still stock and does OK at about 18k gross. I don't let it hunt and I don't let it lug at low rpms and it does fine. Will it last? Probably not at these weights but for now its Ok and has been for 4 years.

Bill

4:10's or 3.54's, 4:10's are much better for towing with the 24V Auto's. Shift down below 1800RPM's, take it out of OD manually on hills. Around town lock out OD. Spend some time reading everything at this site:
