Companion 5th adapter
Companion 5th adapter
Can you use the companion 5th adapter with the pop up goose neck hitch? Currently looking at getting a pop up underbed gooseneck hitch and would like to haul a 5th wheel camper. Any info would be great !!
If you are talking about one that hooks onto the ball in your truck-Yes you can i use a putnam firehawk top half for the 5th wheel rated at 24,000 it works great for me with my 26 foot camper. I made my own goose gooseneck ball setup in 2 of my trucks so i can haul either style hitch with either truck. Takes me 5 minuets to go from one to the other and when the ball is out i have a perfectly clean bed no rails, no plate just a 3" hole in the floor.
This will be my 5th year with this setup.

So you just bought the head hey? Check out my attachment.. is this the part you bought? I've circled it in red. Seems like this would be a better option than replacing the trailers hitch setup with a gooseneck adapter. Anyone else use this?
Not really I found one on ebay for 230$ shipped... Seems like the B&W may be the better way to go though.. A few questions about the Companion: Does the Companion rub the truck bed floor? It just mounts in place of the flip over ball right?

Sweet !!! Looks like i'll pass on the pop up and wait for a deal on a B&w turnover. Really don't need the goose neck but would be nice to have as alot of my buddies have goose neck trailers. Thanks for the info... anyone else have any input?
putnam hitch
Smokem yes that is what my 5th wheel head looks like but i made my own base to install it on . The head seems to be a very well built unit- it is heavy and works great for me. One truck is a 3/4 4x4 and the other one is a 2wd dually quad cab. I can change from gooseneck ball to 5th wheel in about 4 minutes or remove everything and have a clear bed that you can lay drywall, plywood ect flat on. My total investment to do both trucks my self is under $400.00 i did get the firehawk head used (maybe 4 or 5 times) form the guy i bought my camper from. Yes i think for you this would be a much better option for you than the adapter on the trailer my buddy has a 30' jayco with a slide and has a gooseneck adapter on it and he hates it the way it tows he did not listen to me before but he is ready to change it now.
I just bought another truck a 96 extended 4x4 long box and i will set it up the same way should cost me around $60 bucks in materials and a few hours work.
I have a little over 6 inches of rail clearance and center the ball 1 inch forward of the axle center line on the truck. My trailers tow great set level and i dry camp back in the woods off roads.

I've got the B&W turnover ball hitch and the B&W Companion 5th wheel hitch set up in my rig. I did the research and in my opinion theirs is the best out their. A little pricey but I got the owner of the camper lot to throw in the Companion hitch when I bought my camper. They set it up and all - sweet! Getting ready to install a B&W in my daughters 2001 CTD.
