CARNAGE!!! broke pinion shaft off at seal!!

no pics, but here is the story... I had 10,000# of firewood on my trailer and headed up my driveway. trailer brakes MIA and the driveway is STEEEP! It got icy after the corner(couldn't walk on it) and I spun out in 4-low. I tried to burn her down to gravel with all four studs, but got a quick lesson in backing a trailer up at speed that only worked for 50 REALLY FAST ' till she jacknifed, and my brain quit long enough to hit the brakes HORRIBLE noises from the bottom, and I got out to see my rear driveshaft sheared off at the seal, behind the yoke, and the front driveshaft's ujoint exploded all over heck

GET YOUR TRAILER BRAKES FIXED!!!!!! A $100 brake controller seems pretty cheap right now

The combination of 4-low and super-sudden impact (spinning tires in fwd gear while sliding back) seems to me this was somewhat foreseeable. Gotta respect what the CTD can do to a driveline with 4lo helping the tq by 2.7x!

How did you shock the driveline?

Thought your studs were on ice over gravel...

Man... Sorry to hear of the carnage. It's one thing to break parts in competition, it's another to break them just trying to get a job done.

I'm having trouble picturing exactly what happened though. How did the driveline get shocked THAT bad?

The only thing I can think is the truck must have gone to jumping up and down while it was trying to get traction. That would jar the driveline pretty bad.

Judging by your signature, it must have been a Dana 70 rearend?

It must have hopped or went from no traction to plenty of traction in a hurry...

I'd say it was induced by wheelhop.
