Threw my rear shaft going 75 mph carnage!!

Well I was on my way home from Indiana pulling a car trailer with my new 02 WS6 Trans Am with only 6000 miles on it. I was about 20 miles from home and wham the rear shaft slammed into the ground going 75mph. As you can see from the pics it destroyed the rear driveshaft, The two bearing caps were bone dry while the other two were full of grease it also at first glance took out the rear tailshaft on my transfer case.I didnt have my front shaft installed cause I hate turning all that extra stuff, I have the truck scheduled to get the EMS off road hub conversion kit done in a few weeks. I did get the truck home. I had a friend bring me my front shaft and we got it off the highway, we then took the car off the trailer and put my Dodge on it. I knew something was wrong I could feel it vibrating. When we stopped in Pittsburg for the night I checked the rear shaft but it wasnt loose. And I had replaced that u joint once already. I knew my clutch was going out I could feel it slipping. I ended up smoking the clutch getting it off the trailer, I had to drive over the fenders to get the truck off and on the trailer, and when I took it off it smoked the clutch. So new clutch/flywheel/T.O. bearing from South Bend $1000.00, new rear driveshaft $450.00,(still has non greaseable u-joints) transfer case tail housing $350.00, seal for tailshaft housing $65.00, greaseable U-joints $65.00, transmission jack $85.00. I got the trans and case out today and notice I cracked the rear case on the transfer case in 3 spots as well, thats another $120.00. A new NV241HD is almost $2,500. I can tell you the trans is huge, point of all of this, I would strongly suggest you put greasable u-joints in and grease them at every oil change and save yourself the money this cost me. I am still working on it, as far as my rear air bags, ladder bar set up, stainless brakelines, billet shock rezzy holders, a bunch of new powder coated things to put on. I can tell you all with the 38's I am getting 20-22 mpg on the highway going 70-75mph. The truck runs great and this is the first time anything like this has happened. My clutch lasted for 115,000 miles, and was hard for all of it, plowing snow, towing trailers, pulling stumps, so I guess I got a good life out of it. like I said before I am getting the EMS off road hub conversion kit done as soon as they get some kits in. I am also getting them to put in new ball joints as it will be easy to do with it all apart. I will let you all know how I like the hub kit, I have wanted it for some time now. I am glad I live close to them, they have really reasonable rates, and seem like good people.

OUCH, that sucks.

I just had a new driveshaft built for $280. I went with a one piece unit and upped the wall thickness to .095". I still use the NON-greaseable u-joints because they are MUCH stronger. When I used to 4-wheel, I broke to many greasables.

This place has NV241DHDs for $1100, and I know of a few guys that have them with zero problems.

I have the same Harbor Freight trans jack. Probably some of the best money I spent. Its been used MANY times now. Just be careful when you lower the trans with it. The 1st time I used it, I put the air impact on it in recerse, hit the trigger, and down she came FAST!!

I feel your pain (although I did not get as scathed as you did). U-Joint between slip yoke and drive shaft broke towing my 5'ver last week. Pulled drive shaft and went on my way in 4HI.
Luckily, driveshaft didn't hit the ground (cross member saved it). It did take out a section of my 4" exhaust pipe and my slip yoke. My yoke end looked similar to yours.
Took drive shaft and slip yoke to a local shop. They welded on a new yoke end, balanced drive shaft, installed new greasable u-joints in both ends and gave me a reman slip yoke for $250. Getting exhaust repaired tomorrow. Phone estimate is about $65

Well I got the South Bend flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and t.o. bearing in, I was amazed of how much grime was inside the bellhousing. I cleaned it all up and finally got the trans up and in. I will say it was the hardest/heaviest trans I have ever done. Would of been near impossible without a trans jack. I had to use the trans jack, floor jack and my trucks bottle jack to get it in. I worked on it yesterday for a few hours and it wasnt going in, I decided to try today and after an hour just like every other trans job I have ever done it just slide right in, I was so happy. Just need my t-case and Ill be set. It is a job I dont wanna do again anytime soon, it SUCKED!!!!!!!

I broke the yoke off my D80 in my 2000 pulling out of the end of my road with an empty trailer on. Pulled the shaft off and threw it in the bed, put it in 4 Hi, turned around and went home and parked it.

My rear drive shaft broke about a month ago going down interstate pulling a trailer. $650 for a new shaft. For me the failure was the hanger bearing, it broke by the bolts and came down. Hearing all the damage that happened to your truck makes me feel lucky.

Drive shaft loops are in my near future!!
