I don't know how safe it is, but a friend of mine has a F-250 crew cab PSD with a short box and an 8' camper. He just puts the tailgate down and puts it on. The camper does not have any hang over in the back. He hasn't had any problems. Like I said I don't know if this is advisable.
Hope that helps.

I would stick with a camper made for a short bed, there are a lot out there. I have a Northstar Laredo SC that works great for us, shower, refer, stove , outside shower and flush toilet.
Campers made for short beds have been built so the center of gravity is just forward of the rear axle, not behind it. Putting too much weight behind the rear axle lifts the front end and puts a strain on suspensioin.

I am currently searching for a cab over for my 04 shortbox. The biggest issue seems to be weight. Many camper builders have 8 1/2 models with the center of gravity positioned in front of the axles. You just have to watch the wet weight. And I would say pretty much forget the slides. I have been looking at a used 8 1/2 footer that comes in wet at 1800 lbs. The center of gravity is 2 inches in front of the rear axle. I figure another 750 lbs in camping gear which puts my truck at max payload and I figure under max on the tires. I am also installing airbags to deal with any sagging or control issues.

I haul a 10 ft Lance in a long bed 3500 with a 2 ft hangover. I have air bags under my springs and sway struts on the camper front. I wouldn't go longer than an 8 ft camper on a short bed.

There are several campers made specifically for a short bed. Do an internet search and you'll find all the info you want. You may want to start with Lance.

I sell campers and Lance and Northern Lite both make camper that will work good on your truck and note need any mods to your truck. Lance 845 and Northern Lite 8.5 Lite and Classic.
Ijust put a northern lite on mine and it pretty much sits level with the camper in the bed.
