Anyone using a HUGE slide in camper on a 3500?

I have a customer with a 2005 3500 drw 2wd HO with an auto trans 3.73 gear. He has 5k miles on it and averages 10.5 mpg. I wish I had a pict or model number of this Lance slide in camper he has. The thing is a monster!! I've updated the ecm for the mileage improvement even though I felt it was pretty futile. I have the feeling it's about as good as it's going to get, but was wondering if anyone here ran a similar combo and what kind of mpg you've experienced. Any mods that would help mpg?

I wouldn't know how to modify a 2005. I've seen the 12.5' Lance. Nice. Big. Expensive. Heavy, 5000 pounds? My small Lance combined with my boat give me a payload of about 6500 lbs. With your customer's 3500's extra weight he might be about the same total. I get 13 to 16 MPH depending on wind, usually drive at 62 MPH, 1700 RPM, OD. My co-driver tends to push it past 65 MPH, she does not understand trailer fishtailing, sway, stopping distances, gentle accelleration and braking, what the boost gauge means, etc. If she drives for half a tankfull we get 100 miles less on that tank. Your customer's rig has about the same wind resistance as mine, and the capability to run at 75 MPH. If he does, that explains the low fuel milage.

I'm thinking he might be better off with a 4.10 gear to help get all that mass moving.

It sounds like he's got one of these.

have gotten as high as 14ish, usually around10-12 at 62 mph and about 1750-1800 rpm.

Same as Norm

I can get up to 14 mpg, but that is at around 40-45 mph.
At 55-60 mph I'll drop to around 12.

Thanks for the replys guys. I'm not totally sure he has the slideout, but the size in that Lance ad looks about right. I'll have him take a look at this when he stops in at work. I was pretty much thinking all along that 10-11 was probably about normal, but it's sure hard to tell someone that. He has no complaints about the power however!

I know his is new but I noticed a huge difference when I hit about 5-7k on my new truck and say my mileage drop about 3-4mpg... I was asking the dealer about it and they couldn't find anything so I just did some changes of my own... CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER I would have expected more than 5-7k out of the filter but I guess not!! As soon as I changed the filter I got back my 3-4mpg and then some. Just a thaught it is only about $15.00 from napa for the filter but it is well worth it.

Only $15 from Napa, Cummins, or most Diesel Injection shops,.....but ~$47 from the Dodge dealer for the EXACT same filter.

Length of time between fuel filter changes will depend on the quality of fuel you get from your local retailer.
I usually get 10,000 miles or so between changes.
I monitor my fuel pressure Post-Filter so when I see my WOT pressures lower than "normal" I know it's time to change it.
