The size of some of the 5th wheels out there, I'm suprised you don't see more of these being used.

You can get used Pete 362's and Kenworth K100's pretty cheap, I imagine Freightliner and Volvos would be the same way. If someone was in good enough shape to get up the side of one of 'em, I think it might be kinda appealing vs. a $50k 1 ton pickup.

...until you have to register and insure it.
Thats where the fun stops... then agian, I suppose if you can afford a fifth wheel large enough to justify a Kenworth or Pete, then you probably dont worry about such things.

You could always get both:

The Cowboy Caddy would be sweet too, but a little bit of a budget buster.
Some of the ones you see getting drug around by a tonner would probably justify something along those lines was what I was getting at. At least with that you'd have enough motor, weight, and braking to control the thing.
Plus, I think pulling a 5th wheel with that Detroit screaming up a hill would just be too funny.

if i remember right i dont think you have to register it as a semi if your not hauling comerical good or for hire. i remember watching somthing or reading somthing that says if your using it to tow a camper it gets a in a loop whole some were. i know that some of my rodeo buddies dont have cdls and pull big living quater horsetrailers with a semi and have it registerd as a light truck.

I wonder if that depends on what state it's registered in. I'm pretty sure you can get away with driving it without a CDL if you're not for hire, not sure about licensing the actual truck though.

Edit: Got to reading through the questions he's answered, and somebody has taken the turbo off the thing, it's now a N/A 8v92.

Theres a forum over at the Escapees just for folks who use tractors to pull their 5ers, typicaly drop a axle, add potty, fridge and a couple other things then get it registered as an RV (not all states will allow this) many build a bed for it too.

Ive always wondered if they make semi-sized campers for semi trucks, and if they dont, why not?

Something like that, money would talk. I'm sure Featherlite would build you a custom 53' camper if you could talk loud enough. Of course, finding a campground you could get a rig like that into might be little tough.
