Is this possible or am I dreamin.......

Here's the current setup: 2002 2500 4x4 Running EZ 275's have upgraded AFE air fiter and upgraded t/c. Recently went to FASS II for reliability. What I want to do is swap out the 275's for some Stage II 80 hp injectors. I'd like to keep the HY turbo, and only tow about 8k every once in a while. My concern is egts while towing, can the HY keep up? No problems with current setup, I just want a little more power. If I went to a 4" exhaust would that help out on the egts? Or with the added hp push the HY past its limit?

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks,

Bocifus

I think if you do the 4" exhaust you will be OK Are you running a fueling or timing box? Boost fooler, wastegate elbow?

The added power is probably gonna push you over the limit. My roommate has Mach 1.5's (90hp) and a comp in EZ mode with stock straight pipe and a BHAF and he is hitting 1250* pre turbo. He's got an HX35 though.

I have run with whats in my signature on level 4 sublevel 3 towing a 12,000 lb 5th wheel (20,000 lbs GCW) at 75 MPH up and down grades in OD into a stronge head wind for 4 hours without any problems at all. Just keep an eye on the pyro gauge, after all thats what you installed it for. 1200 degrees is fine just, when she reaches 1250-1300 degrees back out of the throttle or down shift.

I did this only one time when I needed to get some where in a hurry, I would never run that hard on a regular bases. It did do it without any problems, I just don't push my vehicles that hard.

Running an EZ with the wastegate clamped. I am thinking a 4" exhaust should help reduce egts.

I have pretty much the same setup as your current with a 4" exhaust. And the HY does ok however when I am pulling in the mountains here it can be a bit less than I prefer. I did just send my turbo to Piers www.piersdiesel.com to have him do some work on it. It is not listed on his webpage but he calls it a Nasty 9. Bigger pinwheel and better bearings etc. Says it increases the map to about 33-34psi. I have not had a chance to install it yet but will be soon. The cost is quite a bit less than converting to an HX and a new exhaust housing and it wont have the lag of the hx with the auto. Might be worth a call. The 4" exhaust will help some with the egts.

Pends on yer elevation, if you are low it will prolly be OK but if above 4k than prolly not, I noticed a big diff in my truck at sea level vs. 9 k.................at 9 k my hx aint enough to go past level 3 on my comp.

Whitmore, elevation is not a problem here in So. Cal., but I do camp at the beach and mostly up in the San Bernadino Mts and have one long mtn climb to get to the campground. This would be the only place I have a concern. Emailed Harry at Piers about the Nasty 9, now I have more questions for him. Sounds like it may be exactly what I want/need. Thanks Barry. Drug my old trailer up the grapevine last weekend with no egt problems, haven't taken delivery of the new trailer but it weighs more than my older one. Maybe I should tow the new one first with the 275's and get a baseline then throw in the jammer II's and see where I'm at.

Thanks guys,

OK - Ordered the Nasty 9 today, after a few emails and a phone call. I think this will do the trick.

Thanks for the tip.

To answer you in a word, No...I did the same thing, my poor hy9 was fine til I stuck my foot in it..Then it was like an arm wrestling contest...Some resistance, but was soon overcome with heat...

I went with the PDR hybrid, only because I wanted it to spool like the 9 did..And it does..Works fine for what I have, makes just under 500 ponies, but I would need more for towing or constant running above level 5..

BTW, my 0-60 times are just under 5 sec..That mad ecm & this turbo are why..The HP hits now. No waiting for spool or fuel..

I have decided not to go the Nasty 9 route. Going with a PDR HX35/12. Should spool just about the same as a stock HY and move more air. Thanks for all the input. Man choosing the right turbo is as difficult as choosing the right woman.
