K&N Question ???

Lord knows I'm not trying to start a filter war .... but, I keep hearing nasty comments about my K&N from some more than skilled wrench benders. I don't believe they make a bad filter, it just might not fit my application. ???

I have an insert type, factory box. I work in so much dirt I had to bring a bag to town so the food tasted right. been told K&N 's are too pourous and suck in a lot of that stuff.

It was on there when i bought the truck, 2000 miles and no movement on the filter minder, is it still reliable?

Re:K&N Question ???

This can be a subject as touchy as motor oil.

Bottom line is; no engine failures have been attributed to K&N air filters.

Most issues that I've heard of have been a poor seal in the stock airbox causing increased ingested dirt, rather than the filter media itself.

I've run K&N's in the past, and am currently running another brand oiled air filter in the stock box. Oil analysis report with over 13,000 miles on the oil, showed only 3ppm silicon (dirt) in the sample. This filter is doing it's job.

For peace of mind, do an oil analysis to see what the silicon level is. That'll be the indicator for your application, fact not opinion.

Re:K&N Question ???

I ran a K&N for 2 years in a stock air box....the tricky part is the seal and to not over oil the filter....I would check my turbo pipe and turbo inlet every service for dirt....and my oil samples always looked good

I now have put on a BHAF and prefer it over the K&N filter

Re:K&N Question ???

Read last year of a million mile 12 valve Cummins that ran the same K&N airbox filter, serviced every 100k, for over 900k of those miles. The only engine rebuild was at 600k. It also used Delo for it's engine oil.
That should mean something.

Re:K&N Question ???

I ran a K&N for about two years before switching to a Scotty II to eliminate the AirBox sealing problems, and let in more cool air.

I have run K&N in # gasser cars and 2 harleys with no problems I think the suggestions about testing the oil is the ticket I am going to send my oil for testing and I will then make further judgement about the K&N

I'll throw in my 2 cents here. Rural medic and Pappyman are right on about getting a good seal. I ran a K&N in my F150 with the 300 I6. Filter did alright, no performance gains to be felt before and after the filter switch. That engine was a naturally aspirated engine. Our CTD's are turbocharged. They can move a lot of air through the filter. I think it can be real easy for the turbo to suck some of the filter oil off the filter media. Especially if someone get a little over enthusiastic when re-oiling the filter.

I'm only very mildly BOMBed and don't tow heavy so I saw a around 50* drop in my Highway cruise temps.
Those with more BOMBs (me in the future) or guys pullin' heavy trailers will see a greater reduction.
I love the way it positively seals instead of the "add grease around the edge to try to get it to seal" system that K&N uses on the Dodge airbox.
